Doris Patterson, age 91, of Alta, Iowa, died on Friday, February 15, 2013, at her home in Alta.
Doris Jean Hatch was born on April 25, 1921, in Marathon, Iowa, the daughter of Bert R. and Mabel (Wall) Hatch. She attended Alta Consolidated Schools, graduating with the Class of 1939.
A member of the Alta United Methodist Church, Doris sang in the choir for many years. She also sang duets with her sister, Jane.
On November 30, 1947, Doris married Thayer D. Patterson at the Methodist Parsonage in Alta, Iowa. They farmed together for many years until they retired, but she continued to live on the family’s century farm in rural Alta.
Proud of their community, Thayer and Doris received a plaque for their service to the board in 2001. At one time, Thayer had served on the Buena Vista Fair Board. In addition, Doris was a fifty year member of the Alta Chapter of the Eastern Star #138.
An avid reader, Doris visited the Storm Lake Public Library frequently, checking out many books over the years. While her health permitted, she enjoyed attending county and state fairs. She had a keen interest in politics and loved discussing various political platforms. She appreciated all aspects of nature and found beauty in the four seasons as well as pleasure in watching wildlife, particularly the deer. She also was deeply interested in young people and their education.
Those left to cherish her memory include her niece, Deanna Larson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her nephew, Gary (Sally) Larson, of Shoreview, Minnesota; and her great nephew, Matthew (Kristi) Larson, of Madison, Wisconsin; as well as other relatives and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Mabel Hatch; her husband, Thayer D. Patterson; two brothers: Chester and Ralph Hatch; one sister, Jane Larson; and an infant nephew, Gordon Larson.
Visitation: 9:30-10:30 a.m., February 20, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., February 20, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
