January 31, 1935 - February 14, 2013Storm Lake, Iowa
Ron Nehring, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at his home in rural Storm Lake.
Ronald F. Nehring was born on January 31, 1935, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Emma (Burmeister) Nehring. Baptized in 1935 as an infant, he was later confirmed in 1948 at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in rural Newell, Iowa.
Growing up, Ron attended both grade school and high school in Truesdale, Iowa, graduating from Truesdale High School in 1953.
After enlisting in the U.S. Army on January 7, 1957, Ron worked stateside as an aircraft mechanic. He was honorably discharged on January 6, 1959.
A dedicated and proud farmer his entire life, Ron worked the land and raised livestock. Having bought a farm from Walter Scott a mile and a half south of the home place in Grant Twp., Section 18, he started farming on his own in 1967. He continued farming the home place until his health forced him to enlist custom planting and harvesting. Up until 2002, he also had a cow calf herd. After that time, he would get some calves in to graze the pasture until his failing health prevented him. In 1995, he was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), forcing him to reduce his time farming.
Farming was Ron’s first love. Always happiest when on the tractor doing something in the field, he took great pride and joy in taking care of and working the soil. Once a farmer, always a farmer will be how he is remembered. In addition to farming, he enjoyed going on bus trips and gardening.
On March 18, 1995, Ron married Joyce (Lucht) Sump at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Newell, Iowa. With this union, Ron became a father to Tonya and Candace Sump.
An active member of the church board at St. John’s until recently, he served on the Cemetery Committee and as a Church Trustee. On February 2, 2013, however, he confirmed his faith at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joyce Nehring, of Storm Lake; his daughter, Candace Sump, of West Des Moines, Iowa; one sister, Ruth Gerdes, of Lake View, Iowa; and his nephews and nieces: Greg (DiAnna), Steve, Brian (Wanda), and David (Julie) Gerdes; as well as extended family and a host of friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his brother-in-law, Edward Gerdes; his children: Tonya and Craig Sump; and his step-mother, Dora (Burmeister) Nehring.
