Newell, Iowa

Donald William Huseman, age 84, of Newell, Iowa, died on January 15, 2013, at the Black Hawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Iowa.

Donald William Huseman was born on January 29, 1928, in his grandma’s house in Buena Vista County, the son of Carl and Malinda (Degner) Huseman. He was baptized on March 1, 1928, at the German Methodist Church and later confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell in 1940.

Growing up, he went to school until the eighth grade when he had to quit to take over the farm after his father passed away.

On February 5, 1953, Donald was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War. After honorably serving his country, he was discharged on February 2, 1955.

On December 2, 1956, Donald married Joanne Hiller at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell. To this union, four children were born: Sheryl, Dar, Susan, and Dean.

Donald farmed the family farm and raised hogs from farrowing to finish until he retired in 1983 and moved into town. He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, and bird watching. He also loved collecting antique tractors. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing cards as well as teaching his friends, family, and “grannies” how to play. In addition, he liked taking bus trips to Branson.

A very active lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Donald served as the president of the Men’s Club, Dart Ball Captain, head trustee, and usher. He also removed the snow from the church parking lot in the winter and mowed the church lawn in the summer.

As a resident at the Blackhawk Life Care Center in Lake View, Donald he was known as the head gardener. He loved playing his polka music for the other residents, and he enjoyed checking out the shoes that the staff members wore. He couldn’t believe how many different colors of shoes he saw.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Sheryl (Tim) Johnson, Dar (Tammy, Don always called her “My Heaven”) Huseman, and Susan Huseman, all of Newell, Iowa, and Dean (Susie) Huseman of Marathon, Iowa; his grandchildren: Mary (Bob) Bainbridge, Joshua White, Nikki (John) Johnson, Becky (Ryan) Tarbill, Brent (Mallory) Johnson, Rick Huseman, Ronnie Huseman, Jessie Stewart, Tiffany (friend, Aaron) Huseman, and Kai (Sherrie) Johnson; his great grandchildren: Tyler, Hanna, Arthur, Abby, Wyatt, Kaleb, Payten, Raylon, Clair, Brooklyn, Kegan, Chance, Taylr, and Aeryn; his niece, Colleen (Ryan) Hansen, of Schaller, Iowa; his brother, Herb (Anna) Huseman, of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; his sister, Grace Bauer, also of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; and his mother-in-law, Mildred Hiller, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
