Ralph C. Brown, 85, of Cherokee, Iowa, passed away Monday, July 7, 2008, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Church in rural Peterson, Iowa, with Mr. David Orthmann officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery, with military rites.

Ralph was born June 2, 1923, in Peterson, Iowa, to Harry and Bessie (Allen) Brown. He graduated from Peterson High School in 1942. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as a pharmacist's mate third class in the South Pacific.

He was married to Arlene Kracht on Nov. 16, 1944 in rural Peterson. He graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo., becoming a funeral director. He worked for Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee from 1951 to 1971, and other funeral homes in Iowa, retiring in 1986. He had been a resident of Cherokee most of his life and was originally from Peterson.

He was a member of St. John's Church in rural Peterson, American Legion Dean Underwood Post 10 of Peterson and the Veterans of Foreign Wars L.A. Wescott Post 2253 of Cherokee. He enjoyed attending high school sporting events and was an avid major league sports fan.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene; four children and spouses, Rodney and Marci Brown of Cherokee, Peggy and Fred Jaminet of Cherokee, Greg and Cheri Brown of Peterson and Jeff and Patty Brown of Cherokee; seven grandchildren, Terry, Hillary, Mindi, Ryan, Shane, Lacy and Chad; and four great-grandchildren, Calvin, Amelia, Ella and Josie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Beverly in infancy; and a grandson, Shawn Brown in infancy.
