Mildred Jane Nelson
September 23, 1927 ~ July 2, 2019 (age 91)Mildred Jane Nelson, age 91, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at her home in Linn Grove.
Born September 23, 1927, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, Mildred attended high school in New London, Minnesota. Then, in 1945, she took courses at a business school. She was working in the payroll department of Minneapolis Moline when she met Harry at a Luther League convention in Minneapolis. Harry knew at first sight that she was the one for him and set about convincing her. After they married in 1949, they moved to Harry’s family farm near Newcastle, Nebraska. They raised their three boys there until 1965 when they moved to Iowa and eventually purchased a farm north of Linn Grove. Always calm and very purposeful in everything she did, Mildred kept much of the farm business records and contributed to financial decisions. Of course, Mildred treasured her faith. She attended Faith Lutheran church in Maskell, Nebraska, with her family before joining Trinity Lutheran after moving to Iowa.
Mildred loved the outdoors. As a girl, she preferred doing the outside farm chores, but her mother insisted she work in the house as well to learn those skills. Her family appreciated her cooking and baking a lot. Of course, she loved her flowers. She, also, planted a vegetable garden and canned much of the produce. In addition, she put up bird feeders and enjoyed identifying new birds as well as watching old favorites. An excellent seamstress, she made shirts for her young boys as well as repairing their worn blue jeans. Moreover, she did like to use her camera to photograph family events, and she wrote such detailed and loving letters. She had perfect and beautiful penmanship. I think she learned using the Palmer method.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Gene Nelson, of Linn Grove, Iowa; Jim (Lois) Nelson, of Peterson, Iowa, and John Nelson, of Linn Grove, Iowa; her sisters: Lillian (Henry) Solbrack and Elaine (Irvin) Solbrack, all of Pasco, Washington, Estelle (LaVern) Pickle, of Paynesville, Minnesota, Carol (Algene) Otteson, of Paynesville, Minnesota, and Lois (Lowell) Burgener, of Franktown, Colorado; her grandchildren: Adam Nelson, of Peterson, Iowa, Ashley Nelson, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Arden Nelson, of Marathon, Iowa; her daughter-in-law, Lois (Patrick) Nelson; her niece, Susan (Scott) Hensman, of Omaha, Nebraska; and her nephew, Leon (Karen) Thompson; as well as extended family members and friends. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Nelson; her sister, Sharon (Dean) Johnson; and her brothers-in-law, LaVern Pickle and Dean Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove. Visitation is scheduled for one hour before the service at the church. Burial will follow in the Lime Creek Cemetery in Maskell, Nebraska, on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is overseeing the arrangements.
