Don E. McVinua
September 22, 1932 - July 4, 2019

Don McVinua, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, July 4, 2019, in Storm Lake.

Don Edward McVinua, a son of Rosslyn and Margaret (Smith) McVinua, was born on September 22, 1932, in Battle Creek, Iowa. Growing up, he attended school in Battle Creek, Ida Grove, Lincoln Lee Township, and Rembrandt, graduating from Rembrandt High School in 1951. On March 21, 1952, Don enlisted in the Naval Air Corps to serve his country during the Korean War, but he was not on active duty. Honorably discharged from the Navy on March 21, 1956, he, then, attended Austin Area Vocation School in Austin, Minnesota. In 1959, he graduated from college as an Auto Body Technician.

From 1964 until 2008, Don owned and operated Don’s Body Shop. He enjoyed his trade, doing custom auto body work and restorations. In addition, he spent many years building stock race cars and enjoyed the many, many races they ran in. He had lots fond memories of friends made in the pits. He, especially, treasured his 1940 LaSalle Convertible, his pride and joy. Moreover, a master at wrecker work, he won several contests.

On December 26, 1952, Don married Mardell Jean Kilbourn at the United Methodist Church in Rembrandt. They were, subsequently blessed with four children: Deb, Doug, Sharie, and Brenda.

A long-time member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake, Don served as a Deacon and Elder. In his younger years, he, also, served as Kiwanis president, SERPACI president, and chair of the Star-Spangled Spectacular committee.

In his free time, Don liked to restore antique toys and build custom toy replicas. Years ago, he built and flew many line control model airplanes. Moreover, he championed Iowa State sports and Yankees baseball. A family man, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Mardell McVinua, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Deb (Randy) York, of Adel, Iowa, Doug (Anne) McVinua, of Gilbert, Arizona, Sharie (Gary) Bergquist, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Brenda McVinua, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Katie, Krista, and Taylor (Marjie) Bergquist; Jill (Ethan) and Jennifer Brewer; Ann Marie (Neil Himes) Fiorendino; Caren (Nate) Linderman; Ben (Ralna) McVinua; Christine (Michael) Meggison; Randy (Kristi) York II; and his great-grandchildren: Isabella Brewer; Maddie and Tanner Fiorendino; Everly Linderman; Ryan and Logan McVinua; and Jack, Tess, and York Meggison; as well as extended family members and friends.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, Rosslyn and Margaret McVinua; his brother, Roger (Carolyn) McVinua; his sister, Jean (John) Ring; his father- and mother-in-law, Earl and Evalyn Kilbourn; and his siblings-in-law: Mildred Banwart, Melvin Kilbourn, Yvonne Gann, and Dwyane Kilbourn; as well as by many aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Monday, July 8, 2019, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in STORM LAKE. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
