Lela L. Anderson
November 28, 1928 ~ July 10, 2019 (age 90)

Lela, age 90, of Linn Grove, Iowa, died on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at St. Luke's Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa.

The youngest of 4 children, Lela Lavonne Struve Anderson, a daughter of Hans Henry and Emily Elizabeth (Hughes) Struve, was born on November 28th, 1928, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. Baptized in the Methodist church and raised on a farm North of Sioux Rapids, she attended Cornell school where she participated in the music program and as a cheerleader. She graduated in 1946. That August Lela was selected by movie star Ronald “Dutch” Reagan from a field of seven beauties and was crowned queen of the Storm Lake Semipro baseball tournament. On September 1st, 1946, she married Doyle Brainard Anderson. Confirmed in the Lutheran Church after her marriage, she bore five children: the twins, David Allen and Douglas Dale as well as Duane Russell, Paul Brainard, and Elaine Vivian. She spent most of her life on the farm she and Doyle purchased northwest of Linn Grove around 1957.

A loving Mom and Grandma, Lela was known for her delicious homemade cinnamon rolls, donuts, bread, and pies. With help from her five children, she raised 2,000 laying hens yearly. In addition, she looked for reasons to spend time outdoors. She had a large garden and would take her turn bringing the milk cows home from the pasture if she had time. Lela sewed her family’s clothes including her daughter’s wedding dress, refinished and upholstered furniture, and drew and painted pictures. Moreover, she played the piano, organ, ukulele, and guitar; she sang in the church choir and solo when requested for special events; and she loved to dance. During the holidays, the whole family would sing Christmas carols around the piano, and she passed on her musical ability to many family members.

Lela was a competitive person and loved every type of sport or game. Lela did not let her children or grandchildren just win – they had to earn it! Once she had more time later in life, she took-up bowling and golf. Lela was known for her crocheting and tatting creations, including the angel Christmas tree top and tree decorations, all sizes and styles of doilies, baby sweaters and blankets, and afghans.

Lela passed away July 10th, 2019, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Spencer, having reached the age of 90 years, 7 months, and 12 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Doyle; her son, Paul; her grandson, Adam J. Anderson; her brothers, Bob and Dick Struve; and her sister, Vivian (Struve) Bainbridge.
