Dorothy "Teenie" Smith
December 26, 1926 - June 18, 2019

Dorothy "Teenie" Smith, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on June 18, 2019, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Dorothy Madelyne Smith, a daughter of Frank Donald and Madelyne (Grable) Smith, was born on December 26, 1926, in Peoria, Illinois. Soon thereafter, her older brother declared that she should be called Teenie, and I guess you could say she “grew” into her name. Dorothy had fond memories of Peoria where her family was prominent in business and in the community, co-owning the Clark-Smith Wholesale Hardware Company. In 1940, she moved to Storm Lake with her family and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1945. Next, Dorothy worked as secretary for the principal at SLHS followed by the BV County Recorder’s office. In 1958, she began her career at Buena Vista Abstract and Mortgage Company, working there as a dedicated abstractor for over fifty years. Her longevity in the field also brought her recognition from the Iowa Land Title Association.

An excellent golfer who once recorded a hole in one, she competed in the women’s golf leagues at both the Lake Creek Country Club and the Storm Lake Municipal Course, often winning the prize for the lowest score or some other prize such as the longest putt or closest to the pin. She spent many years as a volunteer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and March of Dimes.

“Super Aunt” to her nieces, she attended every first communion, concert, play, graduation, or sporting event. Family and friends have many happy memories made at her home on Lake Ave near the lake. She had donuts or Oreos in the cookie jar for after-school or the occasional drop in visit. Her home, always, served as the family hub for 4th of July events and fireworks, picnics, homecoming parades, and warm summer nights on her screened in porch.

Throughout her life, she spent many days side by side with her sister, Mary: running errands, helping with school and church activities, socializing with their coffee group, or just plain hanging out. After Mary moved to the Methodist Manor for her last years, Teenie came daily, faithfully and lovingly, to visit.

Teenie is survived by her nephew, Tom King, of Urbandale, and his children: Brian (Erin) King, of Nantucket, Massachusetts, David King, of Newport Beach, California, Aaron (Kelli) King, of West Des Moines, Sarah (Reggie) Voyles, of Sac City, and Lisa (Mat) Beaman, of Ankeny; her niece, Alice Graves, and her children: Peter (Maggie) and Eric Graves, all of Ventura, California; her niece, Libby Kestel, of Iowa City; her niece, Ann (Mark) Meyer, and her children: Matt, Makenzie, Megan, and Macy, of Mason City; her brother-in-law, Bill Kestel, of Storm Lake; her niece, Nettie Renshaw, of Algona, and her children, Erin (Aaron) Mobley, and Ben Renshaw, of Algona; and her nephew, Frank Donald “Bo” Smith III, of Oakgrove, Arkansas; as well as by a great-great-niece and great-great-nephews.

Preceding Teenie in death were her parents; her brother, Frank Donald Smith; her sister, Mary Alice; her niece, Colette King; and her great-niece, Laura King.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, June 22, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. There will be a luncheon at the Parish Hall immediately following the burial. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
