Mike Westphal, age 67, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, May 16, 2019, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Mike was born on August 21, 1951, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Robert and Donna (Christiansen) Westphal. Baptized at the United Methodist Church in Aurelia in 1958 and confirmed there as well in 1965, he attended school in Aurelia, graduating from Aurelia High School in 1969. Next, Mike enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country until he was honorably discharged in 1972. On December 7, 1974, Mike married JoAnn Johnson at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Aurelia. Together, they were blessed with two children: Nicholas and David. Upon returning home, he attended Iowa Central Community College, graduating with an associate degree in 1981. Mike worked as an executive farm manager for several years before he retired in June of 2013. In March of 2019, he received a lifetime achievement award.

A member of the Beaver Kiwanis, Mike enjoyed fishing in his spare time. An accomplished musician, he, also, loved music. Indeed, in high school, he played in the infamous band, “The Rutabaga Bunch.” Moreover, Mike valued his family, and he treasured spending time with them. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, JoAnn, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Nicholas (Barbara) Westphal, of Belmond, Iowa, and David Westphal, of Elkhart, Iowa; his grandchildren: Alayna, Gage, Kallen, Evelyn, Isla, and Amelia; his half-brother, Kenneth (Esther) Sparr; his sisters, Sandra (Clay) Meyer and Sindette Voortman; his brothers-in-law. Richard (Mary), Tom (Becky), and Lorne (Barb) Johnson; and his sister, Lynne (Tim) Johnson; as well as extended family members and many friends. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Donna Westphal.

Memorial services will take place Monday, May 20, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in STORM LAKE. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
