Shirley Pepper, age 92, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Wednesday, December 26, 2018, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Born on January 29, 1926, in Galva, Iowa, to Guy and Mae (Hanson) Babcock, Shirley attended school in Galva, graduating as salutatorian of her high school class in 1943. On September 30, 1944, Shirley married Russell L. Pepper at her parents’ farm home near Galva, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Pat, Larry, Craig, and Bill. Shirley worked as the bookkeeper for the Pepper Construction Company until she retired in 1991.

Baptized in 1947 at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake, she, in later years, played an active role in several church organizations. Moreover, she participated in the Jaycee-ettes and served as a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout Brownie leader. In her leisure time, she enjoyed knitting, sewing, quilting, crafting, solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, and dancing.

Shirley will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Russell, of Storm Lake; her children: Pat (John) Houar, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Larry (Marcia) Pepper, of Johnston, Iowa, Craig (Becky) Pepper, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Bill (Dee) Pepper, of Boone, Iowa; her grandchildren: Heather (Tom); John, Dan; Emilee, Sam, Josh, Kelsey, Claire; Kent (Lisa), Sharon (Kevin), Susy (Sheldon), and Nancy (Mark); her great-grandchildren: Will, Zach, Matthew, Jesse, Lizzie, Elizabeth, and Kesi; her brother, Eugene Babcock, of Ames, Iowa; and her sister, Vera (Bob) Meyer, of West Des Moines, Iowa; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Mae Babcock; three brothers: Charles, Howard (Ada), and Lloyd (Arlene); four sisters: Bonnie (Hap Hartshorn), Dorothy (Wayne) Boock, Donna (Kenny) Whalen, and Lovice (Bud) Peterson; and her sister-in-law: Shirley Babcock; Don Pyle.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church Storm Lake Food Distribution, 211 East 3rd Street, Storm Lake, Iowa 50588. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
