Phyllis Jean Toiberg
November 21, 1933 - December 6, 2018Phyllis Toiberg, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa, formerly of Laurens, Iowa, died on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at the Sunset Knoll Care & Rehab Center in Aurelia, Iowa.
Phyllis Jean Spooner was the 8th child born to Florence and Ernest Spooner on November 21, 1933, in Storm Lake, Iowa. She grew up in the Storm Lake area and attended Storm Lake Public Schools up to the 8th grade. She, later, earned a GED in Fort Dodge, Iowa, in 1969.
On March 31, 1950, Phyllis married Norris Alfred Hallengren. After their wedding, they resided in the Storm Lake area. In time, they were blessed with seven daughters: Sherille, Carol, Patty, Nora, Merry, Sandra, and Kimberley. Tragically, Norris past away in 1967 at the age of 42 from a sudden heart attack. Phyllis continued raising her daughters in a home she purchased on West 4th Street in Storm Lake. While taking care of this young brood of girls, she took on a lot of school projects and felt as if she had become a fulltime beautician giving endless perms and wondering if her nose would ever work right again after smelling all those stinky solutions. In what spare time she could find, she relished watching squirrels and birds and made sure she had some type of tasty snack for them.
In June of 1969, Phyllis married Jack Toiberg. They, subsequently, spent their married years residing in Storm Lake, Fort Dodge, and Laurens. After Jack passed away in 2008, Phyllis moved to Rembrandt where she lived until her health declined. At that time, her daughter Sherille moved in with her as a full-time caregiver, staying until her mother’s final days.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters: Sherille Elliott, of Rembrandt, Iowa, Carol Anderson, and her husband, Fred, of Aurelia, Iowa, Patty Weiland, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Nora Suter, and husband, Terry, of Palmyra, Missouri, and Kim Hickman, of Rembrandt, Iowa; twenty grandchildren; forty-eight great grandchildren; and thirteen great-great-grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by husbands, Norris Hallengren and Jack Toiberg; her parents, Florence and Ernest Spooner; her siblings: Floyd, Frank, and Dorthy Schroeder, Bernadette Gynn, Mavis Hoch, Sylvia Neilson, and Edward; her daughters, Merry Haraldson and Sandy Sorenson; her granddaughter, Tamela Geist, and her sons-in-law, Thomas Elliott and Dennis Weiland; along with her great-great-grandson, Tyler Treglia.
Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in STORM LAKE. Visitation will take place during the hour before the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake.
