Raymond Steffen, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Albert City, Iowa, died on Wednesday, November 28, 2018, in Fonda, Iowa.

Raymond, a son of Mike and Rose (Buelt) Steffen, was born on April 6, 1940, in Carroll, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith, he started his education at a rural, one room school house in Sac County and then attended grade school and high school in Varina, graduating from St. Columbkille’s in 1958. Next, he farmed and drove a U.S. Postal truck to Des Moines. In June of 1963, he enlisted into the United States Army, faithfully serving his country until his honorable discharge in April of 1965.

On September 28, 1963, Raymond married Judy Ruth Erickson at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Varina. Subsequently, they were blessed with six children: Michelle, Regene, Michael, Jonathon, Jana, and Stephanie.

Very active in his community, Raymond volunteered to serve in the Dover Township Varina Fire Department, coach and umpire little league baseball, and help with the church fish fry. A member of the Knights of Columbus in Fonda and in the American Legion in Varina, he, also, held post and county offices. Above all, however, Raymond loved to spend time with his family. He will, certainly, be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Michelle (Robbie) Abbenhaus, of Terril, Iowa, Regene Steffen, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Michael (Trisha) Steffen, of Charter Oak, Iowa, Jonathon (Jill) Steffen, of Early, Iowa, Jana Lane, of Sheldon, Iowa, and Stephanie Steffen, of Fonda, Iowa; his sister, Inez Berns, of Fort Atkinson, Iowa; his grandchildren: Amber Abbenhaus-Cagle, of Spencer, Iowa, Jarad Abbenhaus (special friend, Miranda Baudler), of Terril, Iowa, and RyAnne and Izabelle Steffen, of Early, Iowa; his great-grandchildren, Justius Flannigan. and Colton Cagle of Spencer, Iowa; and his father and mother-in-law, Carl (Swede) and Ardie Erickson.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Rose Steffen; his wife, Judy Steffen; his mother-in-law, Ruth Erickson; his brothers-in-law, David Erickson and James Berns; and a son-in-law, Tracy Lane.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Varina, Iowa. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full military rites. Visitation will take place Wednesday, December 5, 2018, from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. A recitation of the rosary will commence at 12:00 p.m. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
