David A. Mortensen
May 19, 1954 - October 15, 2018

David Mortensen, age 64, of Alta, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 15, 2018, at the family farm.

Born on May 19, 1954, in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Paul and Margaret (Michael) Mortensen, Dave graduated with the Alta High School class of 1972. Next, he attended Iowa Central Community College. A proud fourth-generation farmer living in the home place with his wife, Deb, Dave, always, saw himself as a steward of the land, loving the planting and harvest seasons alike. Indeed, he received an award from the Storm Lake Preservation Society for his conservation practices. Moreover, he served as a Nokomis Township Trustee.

On September 4, 1993, Dave married Deb Newton in Blairstown, Iowa. Together, they enjoyed going to sprint car races, eating out, gardening, and acquiring collectables with “a story.” In addition, he loved classic cars, swap meets, and assisting the Post boys with their latest project, including a 1932 Ford “Highboy.”

Dave had quite a sense of humor. Oftentimes people didn’t know for sure how to take it. Dave helped several young men get started in agriculture, and he aided many of the elderly with tasks that needed doing. Even though he had many health problems, he, rarely, complained and commented that he knew of many others worse off than he.

He is survived by his wife, Deb, of Alta, his sister-in-law, Ida Mortensen, of Fort Myers Beach, Florida; his nephew, Brandon (Natalie) Mortensen, and family of Southlake, Texas; his niece, Kristin Mortensen (Jeff Tertel), and family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; his uncle, Ray Mortensen, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his parents-in-law, Wayne and Nancy Newton, of Blairstown, Iowa; his brothers-in-law, Don (Kelly) Newton, and family of Luzerne, Iowa, and Don (Kelly) Newton, and family of Luzerne, Iowa, and Dan (Carrie) Newton, and family of Blairstown, Iowa; as well as by many cousins and friends.

Proceeding Dave in death were his parents, Paul and Margaret; his brother, Doug; his aunts and uncles: Bernie and Wilna Johnson, Keith and Annie Mortensen, Eunice Mortensen, Rob and Elaine Michael, Vera and Virgil Ross, and Gert and Johnny Ferguson.

The family wishes to express their thanks for the care provided by Dr. Glienke of the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, Oncology Department, and Unity Point Hospice.
