Lavohn Smith, age 92, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Monday, September 3, 2018, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Ardis Lavohn Smith, a daughter of John and Bernice Francis Irene (Oleson) Ryon, was born on January 16, 1926, near Laurens, Iowa. She spent her childhood years on the farm near Laurens. Having received her education in Laurens, she graduated from Laurens High School in 1943. Next, she worked at the Laurens Dime Store and then as a bookkeeper for Ferguson Farm Supply in Laurens.

Lavohn married Duane Smith in Dakota City, Nebraska, on September 18, 1945. Following their wedding, they lived on a farm northwest of Marathon before moving to Laurens where they farmed until 1967. Then, they moved to a farm northwest of Albert City. To their union, three sons and one daughter were born. Lavohn worked side by side with her husband in all aspects of the farm operation until her boys were old enough to help.

Never one to sit idle, Lavohn participated in many organizations including the West Friendly Circle Club, the Square Dance Club, and the Albert City Threshermen’s Association among others. She enjoyed farm life, flower gardening, shopping, reading, cheering on the Hawkeye Basketball team, watching “Dancing with the Stars,” and solving crossword puzzles. Her love of country music and dancing always found her and Duane every weekend out on a dance floor somewhere in the area. Because of her declining health, she moved into the Pleasant View Nursing Home in 2012. There, she made many new friends and enjoyed the many activities, especially playing Bingo. More than anything, however, Lavohn treasured spending time with her family, especially the visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Those left to honor her memory include her sons, Don, of New Prague, Minnesota, and Dennis (Donna), of Rembrandt, Iowa; her daughter, Darlys Blomberg, of Springfield, Virginia; her daughter-in-law, Kellie, of Marathon, Iowa; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Donna (Darlow) Fuchs, of Parker, Colorado; as well as extended family members and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Duane; her son, Randy; her sisters: the twins, Mavis and Avis Ryon, who died in infancy, and Marjorie Jones; her grandsons, Kyle and Kevin Blomberg; her brothers-in-law: Gene Jones, Alan Smith, and Meryl Smith; her sisters-in-law, Norma Reardon and Colleen Smith.

Graveside services will be held Friday, September 7, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Laurens Cemetery in Laurens, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
