Arlene Wessman
November 30, 1925 ~ August 31, 2018 (age 92)

Arlene Wessman, age 92, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Friday, August 31, 2018, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Arlene Esther Peterson, a daughter of Waldemar and Esther (Gustafson) Peterson was born on November 30, 1925, on a farm northwest of Albert City. Baptized and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albert City, she attended school in Albert City and graduated in 1943 with her class of twenty-four students. Then, she worked at Johnson Hardware in Albert City until she married Richard Wessman on November 23, 1944, Thanksgiving Day. They spent that night at Arlene’s parent’s home before leaving for Sioux City the next day.

In addition to raising her busy family, she worked part-time at Mohr’s Grocery Store in Albert City as well as at the Albert City Floral and Gift. In 1979, she and Richard had the opportunity to buy the Floral Shop which they owned and operated for eleven years. Arlene really enjoyed the people she served while owning the flower shop.

A member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albert City and WELCA at Our Saviors, the HOA Club, the Golden Rule Club, and the Young at Heart Club, Arlene, also, served as a board member of the Historical Association for fifteen years.

Arlene loved to bake and cook. Her bread including her rye bread, cinnamon rolls, pies, and gravy were the best. When family members came for a visit, she would, always, serve “spamburgers.” It was tradition. She crocheted afghans and our favorite “scratchies,” that we will all miss. She sewed a quilt for each granddaughter and a blue jean quilt for each grandson. She and Richard took many trips to visit their children and enjoyed numerous bus trips together. She loved a good game of pinochle and belonged to many 500 card clubs. She, still, loved to arrange flowers after moving to the Pleasant View Home in October of 2016. She, always, greeted everyone she met with a smile. Indeed, she felt as if she were the “welcoming committee” at the Pleasant View Home for the new residents. Nonetheless, she was, still, able to go to the farm and enjoyed cooking, freezing corn, planting flowers, and even washing dishes.

Arlene’s life will always be loved and cherished by her family which includes Rosemary Cohoon, of Albert City, Iowa, Annette Boswell, of Portland, Oregon, Dee Pearce (Jeff Gibbons), of Scottsdale, Arizona, Tom Wessman (Jodie Morin), of Albert City, Iowa, Patty (Marc) Hagenson, of Tempe, Arizona, and Linda (Bruce) Baier, of Alta, Iowa; her grandchildren: Michael (Stephanie) Ackerman; Meghan (Sean) Alfonso; Ben Baier; Tokey (Eileen) Boswell; Kerry, Kert (Tracy), and Kris Cohoon; Addie (Adam) Crane; Calvin and Heidi Hagenson; Jessie (Kyle) Hansen; Jamie (Aaron) Kennison; Michelle (Ben) McCollum; and Jessica (Shane) Melde; twelve great grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, a sister, Mavis Foster, of Albert City, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Riffle, of Perry, Iowa; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended family members, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard; her daughter, Anita Ackerman; two sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 4, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.

Blessed be the memory of Arlene Wessman.
