Jerry Leigh Buckendahl
November 15, 1941 - August 23, 2018

Jerry Leigh Buckendahl, age 76, of Alta, Iowa, died on August 23, 2018, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

A son of Edwin and Vera (Peck) Buckendahl, Jerry was born on November 15, 1941, in Santa Monica, California. He attended and then graduated from Alta High School in 1960. During the Vietnam War, he served in the U.S. Army. On August 1, 1966, he married Vernie Rassler. They made their home in Alta where they raised their five children. A salesman for most of his career, Jerry retired from the Methodist Manor where he worked in the maintenance department. After retiring, he helped Vernie with her in-home daycare. Active in the community, Jerry served in various organizations and on several boards including the Alta Library Board, the Park Board, and the City Council. In addition, he belonged to the Kiwanis and the VFW. Moreover, he, very much, enjoyed visiting with family, neighbors, and friends about local events and happenings. He, also, loved the holidays and would always decorate for Christmas, both inside and outside the house.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vernie Buckendahl; a brother, Ed Buckendahl; his brothers-in-law, Larry Beckendorf and Ray Rassler. He is survived by his children: Dave (Darla), Daniel, Dale (Susan), and Doug Buckendahl, all of Alta, Iowa, and Nancy (Keith) Erlandson, of Xi’an China; eight grandchildren: Ashleigh (Bryan) Arndorfer; Parker, Lily, Lainey, and Meleigha Buckendahl; Kelsey and Trista Erlandson; and Alyssa (Doug) Miller; two great grandchildren, Neal and Bailey Miller; his sister, Jane Beckendorf; his brother, James (Melody) Buckendahl; his sisters-in-law, Carol Buckendahl, Annabelle (Ron) Chindlund, Peg Anderson, Sally Rassler, and Dee (Kelly) Meyer; and his brothers-in-law, Ed and Ken (Becky) Rassler, as well as by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, August 27, 2018, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Alta playground fund. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
