Raymond, a son of John and Helen (Neu) Taphorn, was born on August 27, 1927, in Templeton, Iowa. Baptized as an infant, he, later, received his first communion and was confirmed in the Catholic faith.

Growing up, Ray attended school through the eighth grade at Odebolt. On March 15, 1946, he was drafted into the United States Army. He, proudly, served his country until his honorable discharge on May 14, 1947. In 1953, he moved to Ida Grove, Iowa, to start farming on his own. On June 2, 1956, Ray married Frances Quirin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children: Allen and Keith. A member of Sacred Heart Parish in Ida Grove, Ray, later, joined St. Mary’s Parish in Storm Lake. At one point, he served on the Ida Grove School Board for one term. In addition, he belonged to both the American Legion in Ida Grove and the Ida County Pork Producers.

In his spare time, Ray enjoyed raising cattle. In addition, he valued his family, and he enjoyed doing everything together with his wife, Frances. Treasuring his children and grandchildren, he loved attending their activities. During his years farming, he enjoyed having coffee at the H & W Feed Store in Ida Grove. Later, he would go for coffee at the Hy-Vee in Storm Lake. Lovingly remembered as a father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Ray will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Allen (Kris) Taphorn, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Keith (Nancy) Taphorn, of Aurora, Colorado; his grandchildren: Erin (Dan) Nguyen and Carly, Collin, and Matthew Taphorn; his siblings: Clara Siebenahler, Sister Janet Taphorn, Joan Smith, James (Joan) Taphorn, Lois (John) Galles, and Irene (Pete) Ruthmun; his sisters-in-law: Lois Taphorn, Charlotte Binder, and Margaret Binder; and his brother-in-law, Ed (Charlene) Quirin; as well as extended family members and many friends.
