Joel L. Grundmeier, age 77, of Lakeside, Iowa, died on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at his home in Storm Lake.

Joel Leonard Grundmeier, son of Marcellus and Evelyn (Frahm) Grundmeier, was born on February 6, 1941. Baptized on March 9, 1941, at the Arcadia Lutheran Church, Arcadia, Iowa, by Rev. Theo Tews and confirmed on March 25, 1956, at Zion Lutheran Church, Manning, Iowa, by Rev. G. Eshenbocher, Joel graduated from Manning High School in 1959. In 1961, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served for four years with a one-year tour in Vietnam. During the tour in Vietnam he was assigned as an advisor to four Army Rangers as a Radio Speed Operator. After his honorable discharge in 1965, he managed the Cyanamid plants in Manilla and in Lohrville, Iowa. On August 24, 1968, he married Alice Tessman of Audubon, Iowa. In 1970, he became a salesman in northwest Iowa for Zep Manufacturing out of Atlanta, Georgia. He retired in 2006.

A faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church and then of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, he loved teaching Sunday School and held many offices throughout the years. He was an avid fisherman, golfer, hunter, and card player, yet his greatest joy was spending time with his family, his brothers and sisters, and his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter, Jennifer (Jason) Fuller, of Fort Dodge, Iowa; his son, John (Laura), of Elko New Market, Minnesota; and his grandchildren, Brandon and Dylan Grundmeier; his brothers, David (Bev), of Manning Iowa, and Mark (Jerri), of Belmond Iowa; his sisters: Joanie Reiter, of Wall Lake, Iowa, Peg (Ron) Ellsworth, of Harlan, Iowa, and Susie (Ron) Schilling, of Manning, Iowa; his sister- and brother-in-law, Sharlette and Jack Weighton, of Audubon, Iowa; and his mother-in-law, Helen Tessman, of Manning, Iowa; as well as by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Marcellus and Evelyn; and his brothers-in-law, Ed Reiter and Willis Olson.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake with a flag presentation by the Alta VFW Post 6172. Burial will follow in the Arcadia Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at the church. Burial will follow at the Arcadia Cemetery in Arcadia, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be sent to Mission Central or The Lutheran Hour.
