Robert Allen Burnside
April 17, 1932 - May 30, 2018

Robert Allen Burnside, age 86, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, with his family at his side.

Bob began his journey in Portland, Oregon, on April 17, 1932, with Lee and Corrine (Marshall) Burnside leading the way for their oldest child. The family moved up and down the west coast depending on industry and were living in North Bend, Oregon, when he graduated in 1950. After working in the lumber industry, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.

While attending Officer Cadet School, he met the love of his life, who, as he always said, was wearing a yellow sweater and jeans the day he met her. On January 30, 1953, he married Lorna Mae Hoberman before being deployed during the Korean War. Upon his return home, they had two children: Susan and Greg. The family started on the Hoberman homeplace before moving to the Burnside homeplace Northeast of Storm Lake in 1960. There, Bob became a life-long corn, soybean, and pork producer. The family members worked together to run the farm, splitting up duties and chores among each other. After Bob and Lorna moved into Storm Lake in 1992, they continued to take an active interest in managing the farm as well as in their children and grandchildren’s activities.

After arriving in Iowa, Bob was welcomed with open arms into Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. There, he remained a member for the rest of his life and where he will be interred next to his wife who is waiting for him. As Bob explained many times, he came to Iowa a heathen, and he would be leaving a true Christian, something he had to work hard at daily to make real in his love and acceptance of the friends and family around him.

Elected to oversee many different responsibilities throughout the years as a member at Zion, he succeeded in introducing new ideas into the congregation. In addition, he served on the Albert City Elevator Board and the Methodist Manor Retirement Center Board. Moreover, as a member of the Pork Producers, he earned the designation of Master Pork Producer. With achievements too numerous to list here, he had a wall full of plaques to show for all of the times he was not sitting in the car reading a book and waiting for Lorna to finish politicking or shopping.

A friendly, quiet, and reserved man, Bob was, always, watching people and enjoying his surroundings. Happy to share his time, talents, and knowledge with others, he had far more patience than most people. A husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather, brother, uncle, and farmer, he will be, greatly, missed by all who knew and loved him.

His survivors include his children, Susan Burnside, of Lakeside, and Greg Burnside, of Albert City; a former daughter-in-law, Rhonda Burnside; his brother, Mike (Liz) Burnside; his brother-in-law, Arlo Hoberman; several grandchildren: Liam (Vicki-lynn) and Lisa Burnside; Raquel (Grant) Ita; and Ian (Crystal) and Nick (Marnell) Logan; his great grandchildren: Trevor Goff; Mara Ita; Cian, Elise, and Owen Logan; Taylor McCullough; and Nadine Veracruz; and his great great-grand-daughter, Averie Wagner; as well as many other family members and friends.

He was preceded by his wife, Lorna, in 2016, his parents, Lee and Corrine; his sisters, Jean Pettit and Pat Wirth, and his sister-in-law Donna Hoberman.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 4, 2018. at 2:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will take place Sunday, June 3, 2018, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
