September 7, 1919 - February 19, 2018Elmer L. Peters, age 98, of Rembrandt, Iowa, died on Monday, February 19, 2018, at the Longhouse Residence-Northshire in Spencer, Iowa.
Elmer, a son of John and Marie (Schmidt) Peters, was born at Anthon, Iowa, on September 7, 1919. He lived his youth and received his education in the Anthon vicinity. In the late 1930s, he moved to Rembrandt where he helped the Eastman family with their farming.
On December 20, 1940, Elmer married Bernice Stange at Sioux City, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Donna, Robert, Ronald, and Roger. Following their wedding, Elmer and Bernice lived on a farm near Rembrandt where Elmer farmed and Bernice kept house and assisted him with the farming chores. In 1969, they moved to Minnesota where they continued farming. Then, in the late 1970s, they relocated to Spirit Lake, Iowa, where they resided until they retired to Rembrandt in 1984. Once again living in Rembrandt, Elmer worked for the city of Rembrandt and took pride in caring for the community ballpark and city park. He and Bernice rarely missed any of the ball games played there.
When they first lived in Rembrandt, they had belonged to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Following their return in 1984, they joined the United Methodist Church. Elmer will be remembered as a man who could fix almost anything and enjoyed “tinkering” in his shop. In addition, Elmer and Bernice always looked forward to their Tuesday Dinner Date in Sioux Rapids where they could socialize and play cards with their friends. They, also, spent their winter months in McAllen, Texas, where they made many additional friends.
Elmer’s life is cherished and celebrated by her family which includes his children: Donna (Maynard) Patten, of Webb, Iowa, Robert (Connie) Peters, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Ronald (Coelet) Peters, of Rembrandt, Iowa, and Roger (Barb) Peters, also of Rembrandt, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; as well as other extended family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernice; and four sisters.
