Melberne Elliott
October 2, 1935 - January 31, 2018Melberne "Mel" Elliott, 82, of Mesa, Arizona, was called by God on January 31, 2018, after a short battle with cancer.
Mel, as he was known to his friends, was born on October 2, 1935, to Laurence "Bud" and Blanche Elliott in Colwell, Iowa. In 1953, he graduated from Colwell High School and then attended Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, before joining the United States Navy. He served his country from 1954 to 1956. In 1960, he married Darlene Meitner and started a large farming operation. In 1968, he moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, and started a new career selling State Farm Insurance. A hard worker, Mel became very successful in the insurance business. Awarded with many trips, he, also, became a lifetime member of the Millionaire Club. He continued selling insurance in Storm Lake until he retired in 1997 after twenty-nine years with the company.
After retiring, Mel, soon, found himself spending winters in Arizona. Eventually, he and Darlene moved to Mesa, Arizona, year-round. He enjoyed hunting with family, playing cards, and following the Iowa Hawkeyes. A dedicated family man, he was always more concerned with the well-being of others than with himself. Devoted to Darlene, his wife of fifty-nine years, who had developed Alzheimer's in recent years, he became her support and chief caregiver for the last year. A very competitive and endearing person, he was, always, telling jokes and having a good time with friends. An avid golfer, he loved the game, winning many tournaments over the years. Indeed, he managed to score three holes-in-one in his last year and nine throughout his lifetime.
Mel is survived by his wife, Darlene; his sons, Steve (Lori) and Jerome (Liete) Elliott; his grandchildren: Kyle, Thomas, Sarah, and Ryan Elliott; his brother, Gary (Mary) Elliott; his sister, Laurna Schlader; and his sister-in-law, Arlie Wilson; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bud and Blanche Elliott; his brother, Kenneth Elliott; his brother-in-law, Gene Schlader; and his sister-in-law, Arlene Elliott.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Mel Elliott will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will take place at the Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, February 15, 2018, with a Scripture Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour before the funeral Mass at the church on Friday.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, Illinois 60601.
