Andrea Barstad-Aase
September 18, 1945 ~ April 4, 2018 (age 72)

Andrea Barstad-Aase, age 72, of Deming, New Mexico, and formerly of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on April 4, 2018, in Columbus, New Mexico. She was a childhood resident of Sioux Rapids and a graduate of Spencer High School, Class of 1963.

Andrea was born on September 18, 1945, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Edward and Edna (née Dandy) Barstad. She grew up on farms in Iowa and Wisconsin. She remembered her childhood as a happy time visiting with her cousins, Jeane, Athalie aka "Chris," and Cathy, playing with her pet ducks, Pete and Repeat, riding her bike, and herding sheep with her dog, Curly II. She sang, wrote plays since childhood, and loved the theater in all its forms, especially musicals and opera.

She graduated from Spencer High School in Iowa, having won numerous awards for her acting and singing. Active in the Thespians, the Honor Society, the Debate Club, she, also, served as President of the Luther League. In addition, she did some modeling for a local department store and took part in the Junior Miss competition. As a young adult, she earned a Bachelor’s in speech and teaching with a minor in theater at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

After she married Lynn Richard Aase on March 28, 1967, they moved to Los Angeles where her son, Erik, was born. Their marriage, however, didn’t last. They divorced three years later, and Andrea returned to Minnesota with Erik.

Active in the Bethel Lutheran Church while raising Erik in Northfield, Minnesota, she sang in the choir. Moreover, very active in her beloved Northfield Arts Guild, she performed, managed the stage, and even directed the Children’s Theatre. After Erik graduated from high school, Andrea moved on to Denver, Colorado, where she worked for the Denver Center Theatre Company. Next, she moved back to Wisconsin to care for her mother but continued to work in the theatre world as a costumer for Norcostco, a costume supplier in Minneapolis. In addition, for many years, she drove for a living. Long hauling semis enabled her to visit far flung family. Recently, driving school children provided the stability she craved.

After her mother’s passing, she relocated to Columbus, New Mexico, where she enjoyed, once again, having her cousins, Jeane, Athalie aka "Chris," and Cathy close by. They had lived five miles apart as kids in Wisconsin, but much closer more recently.

Andrea is survived by her brothers, John, and his wife, Cheryl, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Oscar Irving, and his wife, Beverly, of Centennial, Colorado; and her son, Erik Aase-Remedios, husband of Bear, of Montclair, New Jersey, and her three grandchildren: Madeleine, of Edinburgh, Scotland, Theodore, of Frederick, Maryland, and Gabriella, of Munich, Germany, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services for Andrea will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 5th, 2018, at Joy Lutheran Church, Prescott, Wisconsin, followed by an interment service at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, May 6th, 2018, at the Lone Tree Cemetery, Sioux Rapids, Iowa. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
