James H. Miller
February 28, 1962 - March 27, 2018

James H. Miller, age 56, of Marathon, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at his home in Marathon.

James Henry Miller, a son of Thomas and Diane (Steele) Miller, was born in Des Moines, on February 28, 1962. He spent most of his youth and received his education in Des Moines.

On July 11, 1981, James married Paula Mortensen at Storm Lake, and to their marriage, two daughters, Jessica and Ashley, were born. The couple later divorced. A member of the Roofer’s Union Local 142 in Des Moines for over twenty-five years, James worked as a roofer. No longer able to work because of his declining health, however, he had to retire in 2000.

James cherished the time he could spend with his family and friends, especially with his grandchildren. He’ll be remembered as a man who would help anyone in need if he could. Over the years, he acquired a large collection of Jack Daniel’s memorabilia and displayed it proudly.

James’ life is cherished and honored by his family which includes his parents, Thomas, Sr., and Ann Miller, of Des Moines, Iowa; his grandmother, Nora Miller, also of Des Moines, his two daughters, Jessica (Shawn) Russell, of Hartley, and Ashley Miller, of Marathon; his significant other, Brenda Pierce, of Marathon, his grandchildren: Conner and Mikayla Hiatt; Danayjah Dixson; Riley and Parker Russell; and Emett Miller; his brothers: Thomas, Jr., Mark, and Roy Miller, all of Des Moines; his sister, Melody (Arny) Grow, of Marathon; two nieces, Dawn (Chris) Hiatt and Mariah Miller; and a nephew, Devin Hughes, as well as by other extended family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Diane Miller; his grandfather, David Miller; and a nephew: Jeremiah Thayer.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Pentecostal Church in Marathon. The family will greet friends during the hour before the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home of Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
