Ronald J. Walters
October 10, 1940 - December 14, 2017Ronald J. Walters, age 77, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away in his home on December 14, 2017, with his loving wife by his side.
Ronald Jay Walters, a son of Charles and Anna (Daleske) Walters, was born on October 10, 1940, in Eldora, Iowa. Growing up, he enjoyed his childhood with his four brothers and two sisters. The family attended St. Paul’s Lutheran Church where Ron was baptized and confirmed. Following graduation from high school in 1959, Ron attended the University of Iowa, later graduating from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, with a B.S. in pharmacy in 1968.
On September 6, 1964, Ron married Barbara Haahr in Storm Lake, Iowa, her hometown. They were blessed with three wonderful children, David, Daniel, and Deborah. In 1968, Ron and Barb moved to Denison with their young son, David, to work in a drugstore. They joined the United Presbyterian Church. The family became involved in many community, school, and church activities throughout the years.
In April 1973, Ron opened his own pharmacy in Denison with a strong desire to serve others and succeed in business. Much of the success he had in his business was attributed to challenging work and his long-term employees, their honesty, and loyalty to him, and his many customers. Walters Pharmacy was open twenty-eight years before Ron retired in June 2001.
Ron’s hobbies included hunting, fishing, and attending Iowa Hawkeye games. A member of the Jaycees, the Lions Club, Pheasants Forever, and the Izaak Walton League, he became a friend to wild birds and animals and doted on his many loving dogs.
In 2005, Ron and Barb moved to Storm Lake to enjoy living by the beautiful lake. They have been members of Lakeside Presbyterian Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Ron spent his retirement years hunting with friends and fishing with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He and Barb spent many years in their Arizona home during the winter months.
Ron will always be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, grandfather, pharmacist, neighbor, and friend. With his witty sense of humor and mischievousness throughout his life, he loved to make others laugh. His caring ways were known by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Barb; his sons, Dave, and his wife, Sue, of Glenwood, Iowa, and Dan, of Des Moines, Iowa, and his companion, Alesia Endres, and her son, Cody Gray, of Winterset, Iowa; his daughter, Deb Walters-Smith, and her husband, Chris, of Rochester, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Emily and Jenna Walters and Max and Anna Walters-Smith; two brothers, Gary and Bill (Sandra); a brother-in-law James (Gretchen) Haahr; his sister-in-law, Jean (Marvin) Walters; his nieces and nephews; and his step-mother-in-law, Billie Haahr. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy and Lou; two brothers, Bob and Marvin; a brother-in-law, George Goschke; three sisters-in-law, Ruth, Pat, and Faithe Walters; and Barb’s parents, Stanley and Virginia Haahr.
