Edwin Charles Henrich was born on August 21, 1929, on the family farm south of Newell. He was welcomed by his sister, Bernice, and his parents, Elwood and Zelia (McKeen) Henrich. A four-year letter winner in both basketball and baseball, he graduated from Newell High School in 1948. One of the leaders of the Newell team that advanced to state baseball tournaments in 1948, Ed received an invitation to try out for the New York Yankees. Instead, he attended Morningside College to play baseball and basketball and then joined his father on the family farm. Throughout his life until he retired, he enjoyed all aspects of farming.
A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, Ed married Marilyn on September 21, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church in Early, Iowa. Ed went on to play town team baseball for several years. Later, he became an excellent bowler. Indeed, at one time, he held a 229 average. He, also, enjoyed playing golf and watching all sports, especially when his children and grandchildren were participating. Everyone who knew him, enjoyed his quiet, dry sense of humor. A proud, lifelong resident of Newell, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
