Thelma Weier, age 72, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on November 15, 2017, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Thelma Kay Thompson was born on August 26, 1945, at Sickles Hospital in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, to Loren Earl and Dorothy Kathryn (Schneider) Thompson. Raised in Sioux Rapids, she graduated from Sioux Rapids High School. She, then, went to Omaha for a while for post-secondary school. On October 1, 1966, she married Keith G. Weier in Sioux Rapids. To this union were born four children: Dorothy, John, David, and Kenneth.

For twenty-seven years, Thelma worked at Bil-Mar Foods in Storm Lake. She, also, worked part-time at Alice’s Steak House in Sioux Rapids and the Super Value and the K-Mart in Spencer, and she, in part, owned the J & T Bar and Grill in Sioux Rapids.

Growing up on the farm, she helped raise many of vegetables and meats the family ate. Indeed, the family spent many summers having “canning parties” at their house, especially during tomato and corn season. She, also, “hosted” numerous “chicken plucking” parties, all to get food ready for the winter freezer. No one ever went hungry at her house; if you were there, you ate!

Thelma loved to play Skipbo with the in-laws and in later years, Johnny Tractor dominoes with her granddaughter, Tara. She, usually, had a color book or a search-a-word book. If she wasn’t woring with those books, she was watching the game show channel or cruising with Tara.

Thelma, just, had to stay in touch with friends and family. She went to the kids’ activities at school and at church and to the grandkids’ events when she could. She treasured them all.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Keith, of Sioux Rapids; her daughter, Dorothy (Fred) Machholz, of Sioux Rapids; her sons, John (Frankie) Weier, of Spencer, and Kenneth Weier, of Sioux Rapids; her grandchildren: Jesse, Kazi (friend, Dustin), and Tara Machholz; and Alex, Jacob, Jeremy (Emmi), and Michael (Melanie) Vrieze; her great grandson, Cayden Vrieze, with another on the way; her sister, Rosanna (William) Morrow, of Newell; and her brother, John (Ruth) Thompson, of Sioux Rapids; as well as many other family members and friends.

Thelma is preceded in death by her son, David; her parents, Loren Earl and Dorothy Kathryn; in-laws, Lloy and Jennie Weier; and her sister, Ruth Bach; as well as by many other family members and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Church of Sioux Rapids. Burial will follow in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will take place Monday, November 20, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
