Elizabeth (Betty) Redig
January 24, 1928 - July 30, 2017

Betty died on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake where she had been a resident for fifteen days.

Elizabeth Marie (Betty) Pedersen, a daughter of Christen Jensen and Pearl Sena (Davenport) Pedersen, was born on January 24, 1928, in Waukegan, Illinois. She attended school in Libertyville, Illinois, before the family moved to Newell in 1934. In 1946, she graduated from the Newell Providence High School. She, then, attended Buena Vista College where she lived with Dr. R.R. and Mrs. Hansen, and later with Cliff and Alma Sliefert. Nonetheless, she quit college to become a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell in Storm Lake. On September 27, 1948, she married Melvin Anton Redig at St. Mary’s Rectory. From then on, Betty was affectionately known to close family members as “Queenie”. For the next sixty-eight years, they made their home on East Lakeshore Drive where she, always, loved her view of the lake.

An active person, Betty played basketball in high school. After her wedding, she enjoyed bowling, playing volleyball, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, and especially playing cards with friends and family. In addition, she liked playing golf, even managing to land a hole in one on May 5, 1980. Betty was into the latest technology, and boy, did she love a parade! Her routine included coffee with the girls in the morning and an afternoon Coke with friends. One of the highlights of her week was getting her hair done. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother as well as a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. Usually the one in charge, she would “go Dane” if something didn’t suit her fancy. A sixty-eight-year member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, she sang in the Funeral Choir for several years. Moreover, she played golf at Lake Creek as long as her health permitted.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents; her son-in-law, Rick Hilbert; her brother, Paul Pedersen; her sister, Marian Kinney; and a sister-in-law, Vie Pedersen. Betty’s survivors include her husband, Melvin Redig, of Storm Lake; her daughter, Marcia Hilbert, of Manchester, Iowa; her two sons; Randy Redig, of Newell, and Roger, and his wife, Pat Redig, of Aurelia; six grandchildren: Amy, and her husband, Brad Pohlman, of Urbandale, Iowa, Nicolle, and her husband, Eric Rubendall, of Wilmington, North Carolina, Mandy, and her husband, Trevor Shannon, of Burnsville, Minnesota, Sarah Hilbert, and her spouse, Donna Lancaster, of St. Paul, Minnesota, Rachel, and her husband, Simon Williams, of Carroll, and Roman Redig, of Aurelia; nine great-grandchildren; Alyssa and Ben Pohlman; Andrea and Asher Shannon; Braeden, Dory, and Finley Hilbert; and Erica and Riley Williams; her brother, Jim Pedersen, of Sierra Vista, Arizona; and her sister-in-law, Donna Pedersen, of Rock Valley, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Thursday, August 3, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Father Timothy Friedrechsen officiating. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery, Storm Lake, Iowa.
