May 3, 1922 - August 6, 2017Arlene M. Grundmeier, age 95, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
A daughter of Fred and Isabell (Kallmer) Bernhardt, Arlene Margaret was born on May 3, 1922, on a farm south of Early, Iowa. She grew up north of Odebolt, then moved to the Schaller area where she graduated from Schaller High School in 1939. After earning a two-year teaching degree at Buena Vista College, she taught for two years in Galva, Iowa.
On July 10, 1944, Arlene married Art Grundmeier at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schaller. They, subsequently, had four children: Ann, Barbara, Carol, and Dennis, and lived for fifty-one years on the same farm in Eden Township. In 1995, however, they moved to Emerald Park in Storm Lake and then later to Lake Point Villa also in Storm Lake.
A member of the Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, and the Legion of Mary, Arlene held a variety of offices in these organizations at St. Joseph’s Catholic church in Schaller. Moreover, she belonged to the Pinochle Couple Club for fifty-eight years and the Buena Vista Hospital Auxiliary as well as various social clubs, and she volunteered at the Sac County Hospice. She, especially, enjoyed traveling and attending her grandchildren’s activities.
Survivors include her daughters, Ann and Carol Grundmeier, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Barbara (Rich) Jorgensen, of Schaller, Iowa; her son, Dennis (Sharmin) Grundmeier, also of Schaller, Iowa; her grandchildren: Cari (Kyle) Fulcher, of Omaha, Nebraska, Chris Jorgensen, of Kansas City, Missouri, Craig (Hilary) Grundmeier, of Holstein, Iowa, Jon (Val) Grundmeier, of Altoona, Iowa, and Allison and Roxanne Grundmeier, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; her great grandchildren: Ellie and Emily Fulcher; Harper, Joel, and Mia Grundmeier; and Tristen Stone; her brothers, Richard (Margaret) Bernhardt, of Litiz, Pennsylvania, and LaDon (Norma) Bernhardt, of Florissant, Missouri; and her sisters-in-law, Ilene Bernhardt, of Dike, Iowa, and Gladys (Don) Kestel; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art; an infant grandson, Nicholas Jorgensen; her brothers: Bob (Lois), Jim, Wes (Allie) Bernhardt; and her in-laws: Viola (Curt) Dills; August, Erv (Mildred), Harold, Marie, and Mel (Agnes) Grundmeier.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Thursday, August 10, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Schaller. Visitation will take place Wednesday, August 9, 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 4:00 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
