Ruth V. Schnieders, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

A daughter of unabashed Irish parents, Thomas Christopher and Lela Brady, Ruth was born and raised near Irene, South Dakota. The top student in shorthand, she graduated from Yankton High School, receiving a distinguished award. Then, she worked at the Drier Creamery in Yankton as a bookkeeper and clerk assisting customers. On August 30, 1948, she married Lester J. Schnieders. To their union, five daughters and one son were born: Patricia, James, Mary, Barbara, Susan, and Jean. They made their home on a farm near Mallard, Iowa.

As a farm wife, Ruth baked with love. She made the best white bread, caramel rolls, and the very best farm cream fudge. She had huge vegetable gardens and enjoyed flowers. She learned how to sew and became a talented seamstress. Indeed, she so enjoyed sewing she felt inspired to make numerous quilts for her daughters and her grandchildren. She, also, crocheted several colorful afghans. She and Lester loved ballroom dancing, and they shared this passion with their children. Moreover, she played the piano and gave the girls a love of music and singing.

Ruth lived in Storm Lake for thirty-eight years after she and Lester retired from farming in 1979. They made their home on Kelvin Road in Emerald Park. She had resided at Otsego Place Assisted Living since 2013. She enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, and bingo.

Ruth is survived by her five daughters: Patricia Ann (James) Ries, of Monticello, Iowa, Mary Katherine (Colin) Johnson, of Albert City, Iowa, Barbara Jean (Harvey) Grady, of Granville, Iowa, Susan Marie (Lowell) Sterler, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Jean Elizabeth (Matthew) Bobier, of Burbank, South Dakota; twelve grandchildren: Kimberly (Bill) Baskin; Erik and Kristin Borke; Tonya (Greg) Dardis; Kelly (Jason) Dettbarn; David, Michael (Kim), and Molly Grady (fiancé, Jordan Mitzel), Kara (Cameron) McCarty; Carl (Jill) and Tom (Lindsay) Ries; Karin (Dan) Sullivan; and fifteen great grandchildren; as well as by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Schnieders; her son, James Edward; her sister, Beth Terrill; and her brother-in-law, Hal Terrill; in addition to many other brothers- and sisters-in-law.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, August 4, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. A private family burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Mallard, Iowa. Visitation will take place Thursday, August 3, 2017, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Visitation will resume Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
