Dorothy Brashears
November 2, 1921 - August 1, 2017Dorothy Irene Brashears, age 95, of Alta, Iowa, passed away peacefully in Alta at her residence at Welcov on Tuesday, August 1, 2017.
Dorothy was born on November 2, 1921, in Central City, Iowa, to Fred and Lena (Boss) Egger. Nicknamed “Dot” by her family and friends, she was known to all as a gentle, kind, and loving soul. She grew up on a farm in Iowa and attended a one-room rural school at Jordon’s Grove. After graduating from high school, she earned a Business Degree at Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines, Iowa.
In 1943, during World War II, Dorothy enlisted in the Waves of the United States Navy. She attended boot camp at Hunter College in New York City and Yeoman’s School in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Stationed at the Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia, she worked at the Torpedo School. Very proud of her service to her country, she remained at the Norfolk Naval Base until her discharge in the spring of 1945.
One day at the Naval Base Library in Norfolk, Dorothy met the love of her life, Leroy Martain Brashears, from Baltimore, Maryland. On February 9, 1945, they married in their uniforms at the chapel on the Naval Base. Afterwards, they settled into their first home in Waubeek, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with four children: Nancy, Patricia, Jeffrey, and Steven. In 1976, they relocated to Alta, Iowa, where she lived the remainder of her life.
Dorothy and Leroy shared a love of traveling. Throughout their seventy-two-and-a-half-year marriage, they travelled to all fifty states, all the Canadian provinces, and forty-two foreign countries. Moreover, Dorothy had a passion for reading, putting together jigsaw puzzles, and exercising. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing Bingo and cards, especially Bridge. In addition, she enjoyed volunteering at her church, her school, and with many other community organizations. Most of all, however, she treasured spending time with her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Leroy Brashears, of Alta, Iowa; her children: Nancy Brashears, of Los Angeles, California, Patricia (Doug) Hatch, of Menasha, Wisconsin, and Steve (Terry) Brashears, of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren: Ali (fiancé, Austin), Jared (Melanie), Michael (fiancée, Elizabeth), and Zachary Brashears; Danel (Frank) Burchby; and Nathan (Amy) Hatch; ten great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; her brother, Paul Egger; and her brother-in-law, Dean LeClere; as well as extended family members and friends. Dorothy was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Brashears; her sisters, Ruth Boyse and Maxine LeClere; her brother-in-law, Keith Boyse; and her sister-in-law, Shirley Egger.
