Lester Anderson
January 19, 1923 - July 11, 2017

Lester Anderson, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of Marathon, Iowa, died on July 11, 2017, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.

Lester, a son of Albert and Tekla (Nelson) Anderson, was born on January 19, 1923, on the family farm near Marathon, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, he attended school in Marathon, graduating from Marathon High School in 1940. On October 17, 1943, he married Marvel Herrig at the Little Sioux Valley Lutheran Church west of Rembrandt, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Robert, Steven, David, Sandra, and Gregory.

A member of Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Lester served his church in many capacities. Later, however, he transferred his membership to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. A member of the Marathon Co-op Board as well, he was, once, recognized as Buena Vista County’s Farmer of the Year.

In his spare time, Lester enjoyed wood carving and playing cards, especially Bridge with various card clubs. He and Marvel, also, liked traveling together, especially while wintering with their many friends in Arizona for twenty-four years and in Texas for two years. Moreover, Lester valued his family. Indeed, he, thoroughly, treasured the time he was able to spend with them, especially with his grandchildren. He will be, deeply, missed by all who loved and cared for him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Robert (Joan) Anderson, of Marathon, Iowa, Steven (Joellen) Anderson, of Elkhart, Indiana, David (Carla) Anderson, of Marathon, Iowa, and Gregory Anderson, of Flower Mound, Texas; his grandchildren: Carl (Krissy), Chad (Kim), Derick, Jordan, Lance (Christine), Shelby, and Zach Anderson; Andrea (Keith) Bonanno; Bobbi Epperson; Nick Kliegl; Julie (Jamie) Riesselman; and Lacey (TJ) Schmidt; his great grandchildren: Alex, Amanda, Anderson, Hayden, Katelyn, Logan, Lucas, Matthew, Megan, Morgan, Peyton, Ryan, Rylie; as well as extended family members and friends.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Marvel; his daughter, Sandra Anderson; his granddaughter, Marvel Anderson; his brothers and sisters: Dale, Delbert, Donald, Evelyn, and Vernal Anderson; Ruth Burns; and Mabel Carlson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place Friday, July 14, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Memorials may be made in Lester's name to Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
