February 17, 1928 - June 12, 2017Donald Saathoff, age 89, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, died on June 12, 2017, in Sioux Rapids.
Donald George Saathoff, a son of Ekke and Margaret (Nomann) Saathoff, was born on February 17, 1928, in Pomeroy, Iowa. On March 25, 1928, Don was baptized at St. John's American Lutheran Church in Pomeroy where he was also later confirmed. He attended country school in rural Pomeroy through the eighth grade.
On November 5, 1948, Don married Elsie Davis at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Manson. Subsequently, they were blessed with eight children: Larry, Linda, Julie, Janet, Susan, Dale, Nancy, and Rodney. Throughout their married life, Elsie and Don resided in Fort Dodge, Manson, Clarion, Woolstock, Rockwell City, and Plover before making their home in Sioux Rapids in 1974. There, as an active member of the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, he served as head usher.
Throughout his life, Don was employed as a truck driver and as a factory worker. Moreover, he enjoyed helping area farmers. To stay busy, he used to help with Bingo at the nursing home, attend the Dinner Date, and play cards. In addition, he liked traveling with Elsie, going for drives, doing jigsaw puzzles, and especially, taking annual trips to the Dayton Rodeo.
Don’s life will, always, be honored and cherished by his family which includes his children: Linda Saathoff, of Pocahontas, Iowa, Julie (David) Waterman, of Alta, Iowa, Janet Halder, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Susan (Don) Krueger, of Aurelia, Iowa, Dale (Debra) Saathoff, of Peterson, Iowa, Nancy (Glenn) Wynia, of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Rodney Saathoff, of Linn Grove, Iowa; seventeeen grandchildren; and twenty-eight great grandchildren; as well as by extended family members and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elsie; his son, Larry; his granddaughter, Stacy; and his siblings: Hannah (Hank) Panbecker, John (Betty) Saathoff, and Ann (Dave) Waite.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 19, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place for one hour before the service at the church. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is overseeing the arrangements.
