Donald Lawrence Binder
March 14, 1928 ~ May 13, 2017 (age 89)

Donald L. Binder, age 89, of Alta, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community of Storm Lake.

Donald Binder was born on March 14, 1928, to Lawrence and Anna (Malcolm) Binder in Oak Hill, Kansas. He moved to Iowa with his family in 1941 and started farming right out of high school with his father. He met his future wife, Margaret Quirin, at a dance and married her on September 17, 1950. After serving in the army from November 1950 to 1952, he moved to Albert City where he farmed for five years.

Next, Don and Margaret moved to a farm north of Alta where they lived until 2000. In the meantime, they were blessed with four children. Don, often, joked that he had his own baseball team. After Don retired from farming, they purchased a home in Alta. Together, they shared sixty-six years of married life and attended many sporting events and music concerts. They, always, kept their door open for anyone to come in and enjoy a hot meal, some cinnamon rolls, or a Pepsi. A Grandpa to more than his own, he enjoyed having his grandchildren and their friends stopping in.

An active member of the United Methodist Church of Alta, the Kiwanis Club, the Truesdale Coop Board, and the Farm Bureau in Pocahontas as well as the Buena Vista Farmers Club, Don, also, served on numerous committee projects for the community of Alta. He enjoyed woodworking, winning several awards for his projects at the Albert City Thresherman’s Show. In addition, he liked doing any activity with his children and grandchildren: snowmobiling, boating, skiing, traveling, and fishing. Indeed, he caught fish in many different states.

His memory is celebrated by those he leaves behind including his wife, Margaret; his children, Duane (Deb) Binder, of Terre Haute, Indiana, Dennis (Lisa) Binder, of Alta, Iowa, Lori (Jim) Radke, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Trudy (Myron) Hinkeldey, of Alta, Iowa; his grandchildren: Barry (Renae), Brittany, Curtis, Dan (Heather), and Jeffrey Binder; Jordan (Jenna), Nate (Kate), and Tom (Stefany) Hinkeldey; and Tyler (Brianna) Radke; his great-grandchildren, Gus, Lennell, and Olivia Binder; Nate Harmes; and Avery, Elijah, Jack, Lawson, Miles, Myah, and Ryker Hinkeldey; his sister-in-law, Charlotte Binder; his brothers-in-law, Ray Taphorn and Ed (Charlene) Quirin.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Benjamin Hinkeldey; his great-granddaughters, Chloe and Camille Binder; his sister, Marcia (Richard) Iehl; his brother, Floyd Binder; his sister-in-law, Francis Taphorn; his nephew, Kent Binder; and his great-nephew, Matthew Specketer.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church of Alta with the Pastor Kim A. Dewey officiating. Burial will follow at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery of Storm Lake with military rites conducted by the Alta V.F.W. Post # 6172. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
