Joan Elaine Martin
August 20, 1934 - April 24, 2017

Joan Elaine Martin, age 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, April 24, 2017, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Joan Elaine Demers was born on August 20, 1934, at Swallum Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa, to Margaret (McGarry) and Louis Demers. Baptized as an infant in the Catholic faith and confirmed in her faith as a youth, she became a faithful life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake.

Joan attended a country school in Washington Township, Newell Consolidated School, Grant Township School, and later Sulphur Springs High School where she graduated in 1952. Then, she earned an elementary teaching degree at Buena Vista College. Subsequently, she taught for two years at Galva Consolidated School and one year at Hayes Consolidated School.

One day while Joan was conducting some business at The Commercial Trust & Savings Bank, she met a young teller who appeared pretty neat. Later, they met again at the Cobblestone Ballroom. He asked her for a dance, and the rest is history. On June 4, 1956, she married Dale Martin at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with five children: Dennis, Donna, Douglas, Dwight, and David. Joan liked cooking, baking, and working with her husband and children remodeling houses and apartments. She, also, liked refinishing furniture and woodwork. Moreover, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved playing games, especially cards, with them. Otherwise, she spent her spare time reading. For many years, she worked in downtown Storm Lake at the Woman’s Shop, the Ressler Drug Store, Joyce’s Greenery, and J.C. Penny’s.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Dale, of Storm Lake; their children: Dennis (Lori) Martin, of Des Moines, Iowa, Donna (Curt) Salton, of Ayrshire, Iowa, Douglas Martin, of Willmar, Minnesota, Dwight Martin, of Hartford, Iowa, and David Martin (Sabine Kibby), of Indianola, Iowa; twenty-two grandchildren: Abigail (Nick) Ardoff; Hannah (Adam) Cordes; Kelly (Nick) Kraska; Bethany (Eric) Lancaster; Allison, Benjamin (Jessica), Emily (DeAndre McGilberry), Jason (Tatum), Jeremiah, Josiah, Joshua (Serena), Lauren (Aubrey Newman), Lucas, Michael (Chelsea), Naomi, Peter James, Samuel, and Tyler Martin; Kristiana (John) Moore; Kevin Salton; Danielle (Eli) Smith; Leah (Mike) Wilson; twenty-five great-grandchildren: Vaughn Houston; Abigail and Andrew Kraska; Peyton Lancaster; Anah, Ashton, Elijah, Ezekiel, Gideon, Hezekiah, Jebediah, and Melchizedek Martin; Demelza Moore; Zayne McGilberry; Aubrey and Quincy Newman; Elisa, Carson, Aidan, Jackson, Adara, and Ivory Smith; and Caleb, Megan, and Colton Wilson; and her sisters-in-law: Delphine Demers, Joan Phillips, Joyce Hoskins, and Elaine Carlson, and her husband, Gerald; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends.
