December 8, 1950 - March 16, 2017

Janet Lee Winkler, age 66, of Storm Lake, Iowa, formerly of Schaller, Iowa, died on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society in Newell following a valiant battle for several years with cancer. A daughter of Stanley and Betty (Humiston) Skay, Janet Lee Boltz was born on December 8, 1950, in Grand Island, Nebraska. She attended school in Cherokee, Iowa, graduating from Washington High School in 1970. On January 22, 1971, she married William Lee Winkler at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cherokee. Together, they were blessed with seven children: Matthew, Michael, Billie Jo, Jennifer, Amy, Sarah, and Rob.

Janet worked as a cook for many years in Schaller at Andy’s Café, Diane’s Café, and Sparky’s. In addition, Janet volunteered her time for the Girl Scouts, the VFW, and the Moose Lodge.

A very humble and generous woman, Janet enjoyed sewing, especially quilting, and making pillowcases for children at the hospital. Moreover, she liked gardening, canning, and socializing with her Bible study and card club groups. Most of all, however, she loved spending time with her family, especially with her nine grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Billie Jo (Todd) Heth, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Jennifer (Robert) Atkins, of Stafford, Virginia, Amy (Justin) Schlafer, of Aurelia, Iowa, Sarah (Ben) Sackett, of Newell, Iowa, and Rob (Tabbatha) Winkler, of Curlew, Iowa; her grandchildren: Alex Schlafer, of Aurelia, Iowa, Kayla and Sabrina Werneburg, of Newell, Iowa, Kennedey Winkler, of Lake View, Iowa, Elizabeth Atkins, of Stafford, Virginia, Dane Schlafer, of Aurelia, Iowa, Lillian Atkins, of Stafford, Virginia, and Kalven and Kyler Winker, of Curlew, Iowa; her brother, Stanley Skay, of Cherokee, Iowa; and her sister, Carol Roberts, of Lincoln, Nebraska; as well as many cousins and other extended family members. Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Lee Winkler; and her twin sons, Matthew and Michael.

A Funeral Mass will be offered Monday, March 20, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Schaller. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Schaller. Visitation will take place Sunday, March 19, 2017, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 4:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Schaller is overseeing the arrangements.
