Melvin L. Johnson, age 90, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Alta, Iowa, died on Monday, March 13, 2017, at the Hawkeye Care Center in Sioux Rapids.

Melvin Lester Johnson, a son of Walter and Minnie (Schaefer) Johnson, was born on June 28, 1926, in Farnhamville, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed in his youth, he attended and graduated from school in Nemaha, Iowa. More recently, he attended Faith Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids before it closed. In 1950, he married Harriette Christine (Purucker) Johnson. Subsequently, they were blessed with one daughter, Donna. Until he retired, Melvin worked at Merrill Manufacturing in Storm Lake. He enjoyed spending time outside fishing and camping. He, also, liked dancing, solving puzzles, and puzzle books. Most of all, however, Melvin loved spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Donna Perrigo, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his grandchildren: Christine Smith, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Julie (Bryan) Kell, of Galva, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Tamara “Tammy” Hartfield, and her children, Rowan and Wyatt Baines, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Terry Hartfield, and his son, Oliver Hansen, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Cody Kell, of Sioux City, Iowa; and Aimee Kell, of Galva, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Harriette; and two sisters, Esther (Harley) Wood and Dorothy (Walter) Becker.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, March 16, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake. There will be no visitation. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is overseeing the arrangements.
