Joan Vrana
July 21, 1936 - February 8, 2017

Dorothy Joan Vrana, age 80, of Sac City, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Joan was born on July 21, 1936, in Schaller, Iowa, to Fredrick Arthur and Dorothy (Anderson) Wilson. She graduated from Schaller High School in 1954 and later completed her studies at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC), earning an LPN in nursing. She married John Vrana, and to their union, six children were born: Bonnie, Debbie, Judy, Susan, John, and Marie. Joan and John later divorced.

Joan worked as an LPN at the Methodist Manor for eight or nine years and at the Park View Care Center and the Good Samaritan Care Center for several years.

A wonderful mother and grandmother, Joan loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed baking and making candy for the holidays. A member of the Storm Lake Quilt Society, she, especially, loved quilting and made many special quilts for new grandbabies and graduations. Undoubtedly, family and friends will treasure those quilts. In addition, she, very much, enjoyed sewing. Moreover, she belonged to a friend’s Birthday Club for over forty years. Very fond of her cats and dogs, she had many special pets over the years.

Survivors include her daughters: Bonnie (Bruce) Rahn, of Sac City, Deb Straight, of Arthur, Judy (Greg) Peck, of St. James, Minnesota, Susan (Bob) Berger, of Humboldt, Nebraska, and Marie Kirsch (Robert) Purtle, of Cedar Rapids; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-four great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; and her sisters, Doreen (Gene) Kestel, of Storm Lake, Marjorie (Doug) Hussey, of Ida Grove, Glennis Koth, of Holstein, and Cheril Haack, of Schaller; as well as many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, John Vrana; her sister, Bonnie Filer; her son-in-law, Richard Straight; her grandchildren: Michelle Campbell, Brian Campbell, and Heather Strandberg; and her great-great grandchildren, Lucas Shelton and Aiden Campbell.
