Richard Alvin Johnson
June 9, 1947 - February 10, 2017

Richard Alvin Johnson, age 69, of Perry, Iowa, and formerly of Fairborn, Ohio, entered the Church Triumphant on Friday, February 10, 2017, at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines from complications of Parkinson’s disease.

Richard Johnson was born on June 9, 1947, at Eldora, Iowa, to Glenn Elmer and Irene Frances (Belding) Johnson. He graduated from Marathon Consolidated High School, earned a bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University and a master’s degree from Michigan State University. He began his career as a residence hall director for Iowa Central Community College, Fort Dodge, Iowa. Upon completion of his Master’s degree, he moved to Fairborn where he became Residence Hall Director and later Director of Employee Benefits at Wright State University. He retired in 2009.

On March 18, 1983, Richard married Cynthia McFadden at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Fairborn. A faithful member of St. Mark's, he served on the church council, sang in the choir, and performed with the bell choir - always willing to lend a helping hand.

A long-time season ticketholder of the Wright State Raiders basketball team and the Dayton Dragons minor league baseball team, Richard was ever ready with his glove to catch a foul ball. Moreover, he remained a loyal fan of Iowa State athletics and kept in contact with many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Irene Johnson, his sister, Karen Duggan, and two brothers, Russell and Robert (who died in infancy); and his former spouse, Cynthia McFadden Johnson.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Jennifer McFadden Allen, and her husband, Gregory T. Allen, of College Place, Washington; his grandchildren: Elizabeth, Kailen and Temperance; his siblings: Darlene Foss, and her husband, Gary, of Grand Junction, Colorado; Carol, Marlene, and Ron Johnson, all of Perry, Iowa; and Marilyn Johnson, of Marathon, Iowa; and two nephews, Kevin Duggan, and his wife, Darcy, of Buda, Texas, and Brady Duggan, of Austin, Texas; as well as by cousins and many friends.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, February 16, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Irene Barbara Lunde Chapel at the Rowley Masonic Community in Perry. Services will be held at a later date at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon, Iowa, with burial in the Poland Township Cemetery. Memorials will be given to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Grace Lutheran Church and Poland Township Park, Marathon, Iowa – a place dear to Richard. Memorials may, also, be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home, Perry, Iowa.

Richard’s life was truly a blessing to so many. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Matthew 25:21.
