Theodore "Ted" Edwards
(August 27, 1938 - February 17, 2017)Theodore J. "Ted" Edwards, age 78, of Carroll, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 17, 2017, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Born on August 27, 1938, in Storm Lake, Iowa, Ted was the son of F.L. Theodore and Abigail (Makay) Edwards. He grew up in Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1956. While in high school, he pitched for the baseball team and guarded for the basketball team. Next, he attended Buena Vista College where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.
On October 4, 1958, Ted married Sandra Kay Hyllested at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake with Fr. Alfred McCoy officiating. He and Sandy lived in Storm Lake until 1960 when they moved to Grimes where Ted taught History and coached girls basketball and golf. During the summers, he, also, delivered ice cream for the Furnas Ice Cream Company. In 1963, they moved to Dallas Center where Ted taught and became head coach of the football team.
In 1970, Ted and Sandra moved to Carroll where Ted taught Humanities, Sociology, and American History. Moreover, he served as head baseball coach, assistant boys basketball coach, and assistant football coach. In 1973, he had an undefeated junior varsity basketball team, and in 1976 and 1977, the Carroll High School baseball team won the Midwest conference. After retiring from teaching in 1994, Ted worked part-time. An avid Indianapolis Colts and Iowa Hawkeyes fan, he, also, enjoyed playing golf and cards. Most of all, however, he loved watching his grandchildren participate in their activities.
Ted is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Sandy, of Carroll; his sons, Brad Edward, of Ft. Dodge, and Tyler Edwards (Edie), of Dysart; his daughter, Kelly Treinen (Tom), of Noblesville, Indiana; ten grandchildren: Dylan Bordenaro; Abigail, Dawson, Drew, Riley, Sam, and Zach Edwards; Madeline Hirschfeld (Jon Michael), and Meredith and Michele Treinen; and a great grandchild on the way; and two sisters-in-law, Sally Tryon, of Bella Vista, Arkansas, and Sharon Ruliffson, of Hudgins, Virginia; as well as two nieces; and three nephews.
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, F.L. Theodore and Abigail Edwards; his mother- and father-in-law, Syd and Era Hyllested; and a grandson, Michael Treinen, in 2008.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Fr. Timothy Johnson as celebrant and Fr. Edmund Tiedeman as concelebrate. Lector for the Mass will be Zach Edwards. Gift Bearers will be Ted’s children: Brad, Kelly, and Tyler. Casket Bearers will be Ted’s grandchildren. Burial will follow in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday evening. Visitation will resume from 9:30 A.M. on Thursday at Holy Spirit Church until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Ted’s name. Donations may be left at the funeral home or at the church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.
