Colette Lovin
July 25, 1928 ~ January 20, 2017 (age 88)

Colette Lovin, age 88, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Friday, January 20, 2017, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City.

Colette was born in Albert City, Iowa, on July 25, 1928, to Dorus and Ernest Johnson. She enjoyed growing up on the farm. After graduating from high school, she earned a teaching degree at Iowa State Teachers College (UNI). She, then, taught Physical Education, first at Algona High School and then in Boone, Iowa. On January 15, 1955, she married Karl Lovin. They settled in Albert City to farm.

A rare individual full of spunk and determination, Colette loved exploring the outdoors, riding trails on horseback, fishing, farming, and raising a huge garden from which she put away frozen and canned goods in abundance. Always eager to try out new recipes, she loved cooking and baking. Indeed, she had to serve food five times a day to satisfy the never-ending appetites of those who gathered around her table, or as was often the case, from her picnic basket and ice chest.

A lifelong member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Colette as well as Karl had many fond memories of leading the high school Luther League for several years. She enjoyed various social organizations including the Happy Hour Club, the Card Club, and the Federated Women’s Club.

Known for working together, Karl and Colette did everything in tandem, both in their farming operation and in raising their three sons. Not afraid of hard manual labor, Colette still could easily set work aside for the many athletic events and other activities in which their sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were participating. In addition, she loved family fishing trips, camping vacations, hosting neighborhood kids, and helping with 4-H projects. Over the years, she and Karl enjoyed many bus tours, especially their annual trips to Branson, Missouri.

Colette is survived by Karl, her husband of sixty-two years, her three sons, Gregg (Naomi) Lovin, of Nevada, Iowa, and Linn (Sue) and Scott (Dorie) Lovin, all of Albert City, ten grandchildren: Alicia (Jake) Heuton; Elly (Jesse Bania), Grant, Josef, Luke (Molly), Maria, Ryan, and Zachary (Megan) Lovin; Brittany (David) Treichler; and Melany (Bryce) Williams; as well as by nine great-grandchildren, Chase, Kade, and Tyce Heuton; Asa, Emelia, Isla, Karvir, and Mercy Lovin; and Lydia Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Dorus Johnson. Eager to serve family and friends in many ways, Colette will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 28, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in the Fairfield Township Cemetery in Albert City. Visitation will take place Friday, January 27, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is overseeing arrangements.
