November 15, 1958 - December 4, 2016Darrell Ewalt passed away on December 4, 2016, in Miami, Florida. at age 58.
Darrell was born in Storm Lake, [Iowa, on November 15, 1958]*, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. During high school and college, he, actively, participated in the Luther League and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He attended Drake University, graduating with a degree in journalism. An accomplished golfer, He lettered in high school and played all four years on the Drake University college team.
While watching his dad coach basketball at Buena Vista University, Darrell developed an interest in film production at an early age. Already an expert in reel-to-reel technology in elementary school, he spent week-ends taping B.V.U. sporting events. While at Drake, he found time to begin a career in television production, covering major college sports events for ESPN, CNN and ABC. That experience led to his first job at KAKE TV in Wichita, Kansas. While working at KAKE, he met his future wife, Vicky. They married in 1985. Eventually, his work in TV production took him to San Francisco, St. Louis, and finally to Denver where he and Vicky made a home for their two sons, Kyle and Blair.
Fifteen years ago, when HD technology was in its infancy, HDNet, now known as AXS TV, hired Darrell to cover television broadcasts in the new format. He went on to produce and direct more than fifty different sports over his thirty-five-year career. In his most recent position as AXS TV VP/Executive Producer of Event Programming and Production, he oversaw sports and live event production. He, also, served as executive producer of AXS TV Fights, New Japan Pro Wrestling, and Inside MMA, which aired for ten seasons. Accolades came his way. Indeed, for co-producing the first-ever high-definition Olympics broadcast at the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Games, he received an Emmy Award.
Darrell had a great zest for life. An accomplished cook, he loved entertaining. Home served as their haven where he and Vicky enjoyed the adventure of raising their two boys and a host of dogs.
Darrell is survived by his wife of thirty-one years, Vicky; their two sons, Kyle and Blair; his parents, Merritt and Mareda; and his brother, Steve.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.
The family has designated the Craig Hospital Foundation and Freedom Service Dogs of America for memorial contributions given in his name.
