Virgil Allen Nattress
August 2, 1937 - December 6, 2016Virgil A. Nattress, age 79, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Virgil, a son of Kenneth and Elsie (Marr) Nattress, was born on August 2, 1937, in Spencer, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed in his faith, he attended Excelsior school in rural Lake Park, Iowa, graduating in 1955. On September 3, 1955, he married Kay Zahn at the Harris United Methodist Church in Harris, Iowa.
Virgil dedicated his free time to various groups in Storm Lake. A volunteer with the Storm Lake Fire Department, the Parade of Flags, and Santa’s Castle, he, also, helped with little league baseball and assisted the Storm Lake AMVETS with special fundraisers.
Throughout his life, Virgil enjoyed having coffee with his friends, engaging in water fights with the firemen, dancing with Kay at the Cobblestone, traveling, and arm wrestling, for which he even became famous. A big fan of Billy Graham, he, once, went to see the evangelist with his grandson, Brandon. A racing fan, he loved watching and attending Chicago Cubs baseball games as well. Most of all, however, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He will, indeed, be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish Virgil’s memory include his children: Bill (Linda) Nattress, of Sac City, Iowa, and Teri (Kevin) Eddie, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Geoff (Kenzie) Eddie; Brandon (Kari) and Chuck (Sara) Nattress; Brenda (Brian) Schmitt; Brett Townsend; and Katie (Cullen) Vredenburg; his great grandchildren: Miles; Brock, Charlie, and Cooper; Sam, Carson, and Kennedy; Brayden; and Quinn and Blair; and his sister, Virginia Holtz; as well as extended family members and friends.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kay, in 2013; and his brother-in-law, Gilbert Holtz.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Thursday, December 8, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
