July 4, 1929 - December 26, 2016Vernon Bauer, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, and formerly of rural Cherokee, Iowa, died on December 26, 2016, in Storm Lake.
A son of Louis and Elizabeth (Glassmaker) Bauer, Vernon was born on July 4, 1929, in Cherokee, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at the Maryhill Catholic Church in rural Cherokee, he received his first communion there as well. Growing up, he attended and graduated from high school in Cleghorn, Iowa. Then, he joined the United States Army and proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged.
In his spare time, Vernon enjoyed hunting and fishing. An extremely devoted farmer for many years he, also, enjoyed watching sports, especially the Notre Dame teams. He will be, deeply, missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his sisters: Bernice (Bill) Dickson, of Carroll, Iowa, Dorothy O’Meara, of Rochester, Minnesota, and Alice (Don) Speers, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews: Donna, Gary, and Mike Dickson; Vicki Humlicek; Kathy Johnson; Deanna McGowan, Rick O’Meara; Karen Oyen; Ron and Tim Speers; JoAnn Tentinger; Lisa Weber; and Paul Wilberding; as well as extended family members and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Elizabeth Bauer; his sister, Geraldine Wilberding; his brothers-in-law, Alfred Wilberding and James O’Meara; and his nephew, Jeff Dickson.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, December 29, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Maryhill Visitation Church Cemetery, rural Cherokee. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 28, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is overseeing the arrangements.
