Marvin Radke
January 9, 1926 - April 8, 2010

Marvin Arlin Fred Radke, age 84, of Alta, passed away on Thursday, April 8, 2010, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center of Sioux City from a choking incident that was a complication of Alzheimer's.

The second youngest of seven children born to William and Lena Hustedt Radke, Marvin came into this world on January 9, 1926. Baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover, he, also, received his education at St. John’s Lutheran School. In addition, except for the last few months, he spent nearly his entire life on the farm his parents first farmed near Hanover. A couple of months ago, however, he and his wife moved to Otsego Place in Storm Lake.

On Sept. 25, 1949, Marvin married Dorothy Louise Johnson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta. Last September, they celebrated their sixtieth anniversary. Three sons were born to this marriage.

In 1952, Marvin was called to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. While in the Army and earned a Bronze Star for saving a comrade's life when he pulled the injured serviceman out of a bombed bunker. He returned home safely in 1953.

A farmer his entire life, Marvin raised corn, beans, and livestock. Moreover, because of his hard work ethic, he became a favorite for helping others with their baling and shelling. Even after he had, officially, retired from farming, he, still, helped his son, Rich, who took over the family farm in 1991 as well as other friends and family.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Arthur, Harry, and Edgar (Lavonne); three sisters, Verna (Walter) Sump, Lorene (Louis) Schuelke, and an infant sister.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, of Storm Lake; his sons, Bruce (Diane), of Clinton, David (Anne), of Onawa, and Richard, of Alta; his grandchildren, Lanna Radke, of Olathe, Kansas, Chris (Courtney) Radke, of Clinton, Erhren (Matt) Radke-Mitsdarffer, of Raymore, Missouri, Dr. Joshua Radke, of Sacramento, California, and Meghann (Rob) MacKinnon, of Blaine, Minnesota; his great-grandchildren, Owen Radke and Miranda MacKinnon; and his sisters-in-law, Ruth Radke and Marcella Radke.

Despite occasional bouts with Alzheimer's, he was able to live a full and fruitful life, enjoying family and friends right up until the end, something his family will be forever thankful for.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 10:30 A.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Alta. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery of Alta with military rites conducted by VFW Post #6172 of Alta. The Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta is overseeing the arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Alta (Hanover).
