August 21, 1926 - October 13, 2016

Verna Mae Miller, age 90, of Newell, Iowa, died on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at the Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.

Verna Mae, a daughter of William and Helene (Hammer) Just, was born on August 21, 1926, on the family farm outside of Sac City, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Newell, she attended Douglas Country School #1 in Sac County. On August 26, 1947, she married Dale L. Miller in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Subsequently, the couple was blessed with three children: Melvin Dale, Dennis Lynn, and Lesa Marie.

A member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Verna Mae served on the church circle and as a Sunday school teacher and custodian for several years. In addition, she was an honorary member of the Newell American Legion Auxiliary and a Gold Star Mother.

Verna Mae and Dale spent many years working hand-in-hand in their farming operation. She took great pride in her garden and flowers, and she enjoyed collecting items to use in decorating her house. All those who knew her will remember her loving personality and big heart.

Those left to cherish Verna Mae’s memory include her son, Dennis Miller, of Lake View, Iowa; her grandson, Eugene Miller; her great grandchildren; her brother-in-law, LeRoy Dirks, of Fonda, Iowa; and her sisters, Nealma Rix, of Fonda, Iowa, and Helene Johnson, of Lake City, Iowa; as well as nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a host of friends.

Verna Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale; an infant daughter, Lesa Marie; her son, Melvin Dale; her sisters, Elnora Fitchett, Myrna Johnson, and Donna Belle; her brothers, Loren, Merlin, and Norvin Just; and her brothers-in-law, Allen Johnson, Edward Rix, Harry Johnson, and LeRoy Fitchett.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 27, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell. Burial will follow in the Newell Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and continue until the beginning of the service at the church. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Newell is in charge of the arrangements.
