A son of Ray and Amelia (Olson) Allen, Gene was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on November 21, 1931. Growing up on a farm near Albert City, Iowa, he was confirmed in the Varina Methodist Church, in Varina, Iowa, and graduated from Albert City High School in 1949. He, then, continued his education at Iowa State University completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture Economics in December 1953. At the same time, he, also, received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
On January 7, 1954, Gene married Myrtis Nordine of Albert City at the Evangelical Free Church. They were, subsequently, blessed with three sons, Gary, Bruce, and Michael.
Gene spent sixteen years serving his country, two years stationed at Roswell Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico, and fourteen years in the reserves. Following his active duty, Gene returned to Albert City to farm. Over the next fifty years, he, also, played a very active role in the Farm Bureau, the Cattleman’s Association, and the Pocahontas Extension Council.
A long-time member of the Albert City Evangelical Free Church, Gene, truly, enjoyed many years of serving on the church board. In later years, he, gratefully accepted the assistance of fellow church members and friends, who, compassionately, helped with his physical needs because of his 25-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
Gene will be remembered as a frugal man whose family came first and meant the world to him. He will be deeply missed. Those grateful for having shared his life include Myrtis, his wife of sixty-two years; his sons, Gary (Diane ) Allen, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Bruce (Connie) Allen, of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Mike Allen (special friend Cindy Falk), of Champlin, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Kyle Allen, (special friend Courtney Stubblefield) of Firestone, Colorado, Kelli (Chris) Beedle, of Soldier, Iowa, Erica Allen, of Rochester, Minnesota, Rob and Katie Allen, both of Ames, Iowa, and Chris Allen and Marie Campion, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Emily Allen, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and his great grandchildren, Morgan and Aaron Beedle, of Soldier, Iowa, along with many other relatives and friends.
