August 24, 1925 - August 26, 2016Bernard J. “Bernie” Kennedy, 91, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died on Friday, August 26, 2016, at his home in Sioux Falls.
Bernard J. Kennedy, a son of James P. and Berenice (Cullen) Kennedy, was born on August 24, 1925, in Corning, Iowa. Raised in Corning, he graduated from Corning High School. In 1947, he moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he earned his business degree. He was, then, employed with the John Day Company from 1948 to 1950.
Inducted into the U.S. Army on September 8, 1950, in Omaha, Bernard served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal on September 5, 1952, at Camp Carson, Colorado.
On April 18, 1953, he married Marjorie Hodapp in Omaha. They, subsequently, lived in Omaha until 1957 when Bernard was transferred to Des Moines, Iowa. In 1960, Bernard and Marjorie moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, where they raised their eight children, and he opened an accounting and income tax business which he operated for many years. After a brief retirement from accounting, he became a real estate appraiser. An active member of St. Mary’s Church while living in Storm Lake, he, also, served on St. Mary’s School Board for a number of years.
In 2002, Bernard and Marjorie moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to be closer to family. A former member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, Bernard joined Sacred Heart Chapel at Prince of Peace. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, watching baseball, and following his grandchildren's activities.
Those grateful for having shared his life include his wife, Marjorie; his six children, Mary Johnston, of Mesa, Arizona, Sheila Storbakken, and her husband, Kevin, of Sibley, Iowa, John Kennedy, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Teresa Kokesh, and her husband, David, of Yankton, South Dakota; Helen Kennedy, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jean White, and her husband, Kyle, also of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eleven grandchildren, Dawn Sicina, and her husband, Ken, Deb Gunderson, and her husband, Mike, Jerry Johnston, and his wife, Amy, Jessica and Amanda Kokesh, Roseanna Schulte, and her husband, Leroy, Maggie and Joe Storbakken, and Matt, Andrew, and Brad White; two brothers, Louis Kennedy, and his wife, Kay, of Corning, Iowa, and Richard Kennedy, and his wife, Carol, of Mesa, Arizona; and a sister-in-law, Carla Kennedy, of Nevada, Iowa; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Bernard was preceded in death by two sons, Michael and Mark Kennedy; a son-in-law, Gerald Johnston; three grandchildren, Alex and Laura Kokesh and Deanna Tippery; his parents, James and Berenice Kennedy; two brothers, James and Edward Kennedy; and two sisters, Mary Catherine Young and Dorothy Beard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:30 PM, Tuesday, August 30, 2016, in the Sacred Heart Chapel at Prince of Peace, Sioux Falls, with burial at St. Michael’s Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour before the service at Prince of Peace.
