STORM LAKE REGISTER - Tue, Jul 13, 1937 - Storm Lake friends and relatives were shocked Sunday when word came of the tragic death by drowning of Everett Stanley, 19 years old, grandson of Mrs William G Young 299 Seneca street, Storm Lake and Mrs D Eisenhuth of Nemaha.
Everett was born at Storm Lake but for the past 12 years had resided with his parents, Mr and Mrs H.V Stanley at Council Bluffs.
The tragedy occurred at 9:30 Sunday morning at Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs. Immediately after the drowning, search was begun for the body. It was recovered about 5:30 Monday afternoon.
A news dispatch from Council Bluffs says: Stanley and George Robinson had gone fishing first and later decided to go swimming. When out about 300 feet from the Fish and Game club, Stanley went down.
Stanley graduated last spring from Thomas Jefferson high school here and was considered an excellent swimmer. He won high school letters in basketball and football.
Robinson said Stanley suddenly cried out and sank before he or other swimmers could reach him. High waves whipped by a wind Sunday afternoon hampered the search for his body.
When word reached Storm Lake, Mrs Young, accompanied by Mr and Mrs John Schafer, 218 Lake Avenue, and Mrs Susan Criss of Sac City started for Council Bluffs. Mrs Schafer and Mrs Criss are sisters of Mrs Stanley. They found Mrs Stanley prostrated with grief.
Everett would have been 19 years of age Sept 6. In addition to Mr and Mrs Stanley, he leaves a brother, Bobby Bruce, and a sister, Patty Lou.
Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church at Council Bluffs Wednesday morning. Interment will take place in the Storm Lake cemetery with a short service at the grave.
