Byron M. Crippin, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Byron Miles Crippin, Jr., a son of Bryon Miles, Sr., and Grace Marie (Smith) Crippin, was born on October 19, 1928, in Topeka, Kansas.

Having grown up in Kansas, Wisconsin, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, Byron graduating from Washburn High School. Then, he continued his education at the University of Minnesota. While completing his undergraduate studies, he, also, participated in the Army ROTC. As always, he excelled in the classroom. Earning a Juris Doctorate of Law from the University of Minnesota, he numbered among the few becoming members of the Order of the Coif, an achievement which prepared him for a career as a Corporate and Estate Attorney.

Byron served in the Army during the Korean Conflict, earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Following his honorable discharge, he continued to serve his country through the Army Reserves, advancing to the rank of Major.

Byron married Marie Alberta Bradbury on October 29, 1955, in Minneapolis. Together, they raised three children, Patricia, David, and Linda, while living in Austin, Minnesota, where Byron worked as General Counsel for Hormel. Following a long career in corporate law, he started a second career in planned giving and estate planning for Lowell Lundstrom Ministries, Bethel College, and Compassion International. He and Marie retired to Storm Lake, Iowa, to be near their grandchildren. Among his other interests, he had a love of photography and dogs.

A member of Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, Iowa, Byron valued his faith in Jesus Christ, which he demonstrated in several ways including through his fifty-five year commitment to his wife and partner, Marie. Moreover, he served on the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center Board of Trustees and with the Republican Party. In addition, he participated in non-profit Christian organizations addressing the spiritual, educational, and physical needs of children; he sought to help others learn English through various ESL programs; he, consistently, prayed for the persecuted church; and he attempted to treat other as a compassionate friend. A person of exceptional integrity, he believed in treating others with respect and living his life in an exemplary fashion.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Patricia (Jose) Pardo, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Dr. David (Glee) Crippin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and Linda Crippin, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Alexander (Laura) Crippin, of Northwood, Iowa, and Nicholas (Brittany) Crippin, of Wichita, Kansas; and his cousin, Marvin Smith, of Topeka, Kansas; as well as extended family member and friends.

Byron was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Marie.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 12, 2016, at 3:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Starting at 1:30 p.m., visitation will continue until the beginning of the service at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
