STORM LAKE PILOT TRIBUNE - Thu, Oct 19, 1933 - Comrade O Volkerts, Civil War veteran, who died Friday afternoon at the age of 89 years, was buried with military honors Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held from the Fiscus Funeral Home. Byron Wallace of Sac City, an intimate friend of the family sang. Interment was in the family lot in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Death came to Comrade Volkerts at 2:15 Friday afternoon following an operation performed at the local hospital the preceding day. He had been in failing health for the past 5 years and recently his condition had been critical. It was necessary to operate Thursday but his condition was so serious that it was of no avail and death came Friday afternoon.

Olaf Volkerts was born at Island of Foehr, Denmark on August 31, 1844. At the age of 21 years he came to this country locating in New York City.

He enlisted in the navy at the beginning of the Civil war and served all during the war. He was with the east gulf squadron and served as first mate.

On Jan 6, 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Marie Miemerstorff at Clinton, Iowa. After their marriage they lived at Clinton where Mr Volkerts was in the dairy business. In 1878 they moved to Sac City where they lived until 17 years ago when they moved to Storm Lake.

Mrs Volkerts died here 6 years ago.

To Mr and Mrs Volkerts 10 children were born, six of whom survive. They are: Mrs R.P. Piper, Waterloo; Mrs L.P. Clark, Cherokee; Mrs Charlotte Prince, Storm Lake; O. Volkerts, Sac City; Victor Volkerts, Storm Lake; and Charles Volkerts living in CA.

For 20 years he had been blind, but in spite of his affliction was most patient and was always kind and thoughtful of others. During the many years that he lived in Sac City and Storm Lake he won the high regard of all who knew him.

He leaves to mourn his death six children, a number of grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and two sisters living in California.

Comrade C.P. Matson, the last surviving Civil war veteran in Storm Lake, was in attendance at the funeral.
